Tips On Getting Cheap Car Insurance Every Driver Should Know

Jun 13, 2008
These days, it's a difficult task to find the best car insurance for the lowest price. The market is loaded with gimmicky television advertisments full of happy people, cartoon characters and geckos designed to reel you in. Certain companies even offer to refer you to other agencies with lower rates. It's a challenge to sort out exactly what to do.

With the advent of the internet, you are now able to shop around for car insurance from the comfort of your own home. Companies provide websites that are a way to get inexpensive, or even free, car insurance quotes. The downside is that you might have to spend a few hours searching in order to find the cheapest quote.

A more convenient option might be to make use of a website that will search different companies for you, and will aggregate a list for an \"at-a-glance\" comparison of rates. Whichever route you decided to go with, the following are some general guidelines for getting the lowest car insurance rates:

- Make sure you know your vehicle. One site asked if the vehicle had AWD. It took a moment to find out they meant "All Wheel Drive". If it has any safety features (ex. driver and passenger side air bags, anti-lock brakes, etc) this will reduce the bottom line, but you need to let them know when getting your free car insurance quote, not afterwards. One thing to also note, if your vehicle has four-wheel drive it is more expensive than a two-wheel drive.

- The distance of your daily commute can increase your bottom line. Because every mile you travel away from home increases the likelihood of an accident, it's best to have a reasonable commute, under 40 miles if possible.

- It's a good idea to have an anti-theft device installed in your vehicle to reduce the chances of it being stolen. You might also decide to put in a tracking device, which increases the chance of seeing your vehicle returned to you if it ever ends up being stolen at some point in the future.

- Deductibles are a great idea. Even if you only choose a $250 deductible, your premiums will be lowered. Higher deductibles obviously reduce your premiums even more. Just remember that, in the event of an accident, you'll need to pay that deductible in order to have your vehicle repaired.

- Collision Coverage. Older vehicles will only be replaced by "Book" value, so you may not need collision coverage on that one.

- Find out which driver is cheaper. If you have another adult driver in the house it may be smart to find out which driver will be the cheapest as the primary driver and remember, teens always drive the "safer" vehicle, not the sports car.

- See if you can avoid unneccessary extras. New vehicles are usually already covered with road-side assistance, and thus wouldn't need that as an extra. Older vehicles, on the other hand, may need the option of towing. You'll need to figure out for yourself what extras aren't needed to reduce your bottom line.

- Have a good driving record. Your past record is the most critical factor that increases your rates. Learn to slow down while the road, and allow extra traveling time so that you aren't in a rush to reach your destination. It may even be a good idea to take a class on defensive driving to increase your ability to avoid collisions. Some insurance companies will pay you for having a good driving record, and in the long run you will have saved quite a bit of money by driving safely and not increasing your rate.

- Know what organizations you belong to. Some car insurance companies will offer you special discounts for belonging to certain organizations, or having group health insurance. Know the details on what discounts your organizations can get you before shopping around.

- Keep an eye on your credit history. Certain insurance companies have started examining their customers' past credit history to see if they have a track record that makes them likely to complete their insurance payments on time.

This may not be a complete list of everything you need to know about car insurance, but if followed, these are good tips that will help you end up with extra money in-pocket, and not in the pocket of an insurance provider.
