Shopping For A Car Insurance Policy That Fits Your Needs

Jun 13, 2008
Did you know that the California car insurance market is brimming with companies looking to do business with you? Picking the best one for you can seem like an overwhelming task. You have to consider so many factors including: minimum coverage required by the state, cost of coverage, and the terms of coverage offered to you.

So, how to find the right car insurance? Begin by checking with the state's department of insurance - most have websites - to determine what coverage requirements exist, and to check out various insurers' consumer complaint ratios (CCR). The lower the CCR, the better the insurer is at handling claims. Once you have quotes, match the insurers with the best prices to their CCRs; insurers that have both cheap auto insurance and a low CCR are worth a second look.

Another excellent research method is to contact the managers of several local body shops. These individuals deal with adjusters on a daily basis, and will be familiar with all of the popular insurers. They'll know if a particular insurer has an inefficient claims process, or is pushing aftermarket parts to cut costs. This insider information will help determine whether low rates constitute a truly good deal.

Look at the national ratings for financial stability and customer satisfaction. The ratings may not tell you anything new if you're looking at the larger, well-known insurance companies, but may be very helpful when examining a smaller or newer company.

At this point you may decide that you want to purchase your car insurance policy through an agent. Working with an agent can have its benefits. Agents might be able to get you a special deal that's not available online. Some insurance agents are independents, or brokers. They will be able to give you quotes for several different companies. Other agents are known as captives, and they work exclusively for one insurance company. A downside with using an agent is that he/she mainly works business hours that may or may not be convenient for you.

One thing you need to determine before purchasing car insurance is your coverage needs. What are your driving habits? How many miles a day/month/year do you drive? How many accidents have you been in? How many tickets have you gotten? If you drive a lot or have been in several accidents, you probably want both comprehensive and collision coverage. How old is your car? How likely is your car to be stolen? If you have a classic car that you don't drive often but is attractive to thieves, you might consider comprehensive but not collision coverage.

Now that you know what you need and you've researched likely companies, shop around for the best deal. Remember, the cheapest policy might not be the best policy for you. But that doesn't mean you have to go with the most expensive plan, either. Shop around both online and through insurance agents.

Once you've done your research and gotten informal quotes, you will want to get written quotes from the companies that appear to be the best for you. Read these quotes carefully, paying special attention to the fine print. Be sure you understand everything that the quoted policy is saying. Also, make sure any promised discounts or deals are included in this written quote. Look out for policies that require use of aftermarket parts for covered repairs and/or binding arbitration. If you follow these tips, you should be able to confidently purchase a car insurance policy that best fits your needs.
