How Do You Plan A Good First Date?.

Jun 13, 2008
How do you plan a good first date? Your definition of a good first date is certain to be very individual. Because you're trying to arrange a good date for both you and someone you may not know well yet, it's smart to go by a couple of generally-accepted rules.

Being on time and dressed attractively and appropriately for whatever you've planned to do is key. Your date is going to be unimpressed if you can't get your act together. Even more importantly, be nice! Now is not the time for sarcastic wit or showing off a bad temper.

What you do on your outing will really not matter so much as if you get the chance to know one another. So in this \"getting to know each other\" phase, movies are not so good. You can't talk. Dinner, mini golf, a corn maze, walking along a boardwalk, going on a picnic and going to a museum are all decent ideas. You have the chance to talk an interact when doing these things. Bars, concerts and monster car rallies all make poor outings as you can't talk easily.

If a sit-down dinner seems too formal or too high-pressure, plan an activity that gives you something to think about other than how you're holding your fork but still gives you chances to talk and joke around. Do you bowl? Perfect if you both do; sometimes even more fun if you don't. Same goes for beginners' night dance lessons, mini-golf, or the grownup version of arcades. If it would be fun with your friends, suggest it to your date.

Because you've planned an activity that will let you talk, what you talk about will be important too. Remember: a first date is about ice-breaking and having a good time. You and your date want to form an impression of each other, but it's not a job interview. Steer clear of weighty conversation on touchy issues such as religion and politics unless you've got a good notion of what your date thinks, and whether he/she will enjoy talking about it.

Dating is complicated. Everyone has different goals for it. If you and the person you are seeing's goals for relationships line up, you have a great start. However, if one of you is looking for marriage and the other is looking for a one night stand, you are probably not going to go home happy at the end of the night. It's best to get some of this info out as soon as possible. I am not talking about proposing marriage or anything creepy like that, just being open about what you want out of relationships and life before anyone is too vested in the relationship.

On that note, I would not go and start planning your wedding, how many kids you will have or picking out china patterns just yet. That is not the point. The point really is just to make sure you have similar plans and ideas. If one of you plans to move to Russia in the next two weeks and the other hates Russia, well it may not be a love match.

What Makes a Good First Date? It really does depend on the people, but communication, sanity, good manners and cleanliness are probably all indicators of an outing that was not terribly unsuccessful. There is probably no such thing as a perfect date, but at least you can try to have fun and get to know someone while doing so!
