So What's the Plan?

Jun 16, 2008
Blue print is a kind of paper-based replica of a technical drawing authenticating an architectural or engineering design. Often called or sometimes referred to as "detailed plan"

Blue print design is a necessity for all kinds of construction. It is not just a guide but also helps you to achieve precise measurements for you're building or home designs. A variety of base materials have been used for blueprints. Paper was the option before to be used for blue prints. But for tougher and long lasting prints, they often used linen but as time goes, the prints made through linen would slightly shrink. To stop this problem, printing on vellum was implemented.

In the early century, blueprint was the only low cost process that is available for copying drawings for almost a century. No technical development is required in making the blue prints. It was used before for shipbuilding and manufacture of locomotives and rolling stock for railways. The coated material ready for use normally has a shelf life of two days. Each industrial area had one or two small independent suppliers making blueprint coated materials by order. These suppliers also provided a copying service for small time users.

To make a blue print, the normal use was to get a wooden frame with a spring loaded back, just like a picture frame with a glass front. The drawing would then be outlined in Indian ink on tracing paper or tracing cloth. Then, coated paper and tracing will be laden into the frame that was then brought out to sunlight. It will then be exposed to sunlight with varied time from less than a minute to about an hour under a cloudy sky. The operator will see the blue image appear through the tracing. The frame will be brought indoors when ready. The material will then be washed in running water to remove the unexposed coating, and then it will be dried. A clearly legible copy of the drawing will emerge with a white line and dark blue background. This copy possessed unrestricted resistance to light and to water that is as good as the substrate.

Today, conventional blueprints have been replaced by more contemporary, cheaper printing methods and computerized products. These days, designs are created using Computer aided design techniques that may be transferred as a digital file directly to a computer printer; in some applications paper is shun altogether and work and analysis is done directly from digital displays.

In this age of technology, the customary term "blueprint" has sustained to be used informally to refer to each type of image. Although the industry has transformed to the white printing system, the companies have primarily stayed the same. You can still find companies who use the traditional type of blue prints.
