Born In England, Made In Tokyo

Jun 17, 2008
When it comes to investing in an overseas investment property most people will first consider France, then Spain and maybe, in an adventurous moment, Australia. These are the easy options with large, English speaking communities, English shops and fish and chips on every corner. Well, I have one word for the people that do that sort of thing - boring!

Moving to another version of the UK that simply has a warmer climate is a complete cop out when it comes to buying an overseas investment property and emigrating. If you're going to take such a huge step why not do it in style. Find somewhere unusual or more cultured, somewhere you can explore a whole different way of life. Yes, this can be daunting but what's the point in doing half a job?

If you're thinking of buying somewhere a little different, have you considered Tokyo? Not your run of the mill place, granted, but the wow factor is awesome. Tokyo is the centre of the technological world so if it's gadgets and gizmos that interest you, it is all readily to hand. If it's design and fashion that floats your boat, whether in the clothing or interior design arenas, there is no other place to be than the centre of Tokyo. To invest in an overseas property here would be ideal.

Most people hold a typical vision of Asian countries with their crammed cities and markets, giving it a rather faceless impression. However, scratch the surface and you will find a whole community who go out of their way to make large swathes of their lives as intimate as possible.

Of course, out in the street it is packed with a vast number of residents and visitors all in their private hurry to get somewhere. You will see huge buildings of the most beautiful architecture from the purely black Armani sky scraper to the Prada building. This is truly a feat of modern architecture to be absorbed with its lozenge shape glass panels and the thick cream carpets that line it within.

Tokyo is the shopper's paradise. Mitsukoshi and Matsuya are the country's two largest department stores that are on such a scale that they make Harrods look like a corner shop. Go to Shibuya if it's pop culture you are looking for. It may be home to the world's busiest train station, with two million people passing through daily but they are all here because it's such a great place to be and if you're looking for an overseas investment property in the area, what better recommendation could you have?

Of course, all the wonder of the neon lights and fancy buildings will become commonplace if you live in Tokyo. But this is when you will get chance to see its other side. Hankering after places that afford intimacy is what has led the people of Tokyo to create restaurants and bars that do just that. Small, quiet bars are to be found just off the main streets in Tokyo but they are not advertised and not so easy to find but once you are familiar with the area you will find that one minute you are shopping in Prada and the next you are enjoying a mouth watering meal at a very reasonable price in a comfortably lit restaurant with relaxing background music. This will lend you the feeling of being miles away from the hustle and bustle of the streets outside, bringing welcome relief.

Whichever way you look at it, to obtain an investment property in Tokyo would be a worthwhile venture. You would have the world's technology at your fingertips, the opportunity to shop at the celebrities favourite haunts and the old world culture of private back street joints that serve fresh, succulent food at affordable rates. Definitely a place for the young - or simply the young at heart.
