Seven Disadvantages of Outsourcing, Part 2

Jun 17, 2008
Thinking about using outsourcing in your business? Then you need to know the disadvantages of outsourcing as well as the advantages. This two-part article concentrates on the disadvantages. Three were covered in Part 1. Four more are covered in Part 2.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 4: Outsource Vendors Don't Usually Provide Needed Support

After you pay vendors, they no longer check communications from your job. So if you run into a problem, you have no other way of getting in touch with the vendors. Some services will allow you to email vendors directly through the outsource service site, but others won't.

So you'll find it difficult to get follow-up support from outsource vendors.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 5: Some Outsource Vendors May Abuse Your Trust

The laws in many countries don't honor copyright laws and intellectual property as the USA does. So a dishonest outsource vendor can collect payment from you to produce a product using your information and then sell your product to others.

Another risk is involved if an outsource vendor accesses your site administration. This often is necessary to install a script or a program. But be careful in allowing it because the vendor can damage your site.

If you have to cancel a contract because the vendor either doesn't meet deadlines or can't complete the job, you run the risk that the vendor will take revenge by destroying your site.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 6: Outsourcing Can De-motivate You From Learning Necessary Skills

If a skill is vital to your business, you or a loyal member of your staff needs to have that skill. Depending on an outsource vendor to provide necessary skills can stifle your business.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing 7: You May Never Work With The Same Outsource Vendor Twice

Good outsource vendors can be an asset, but getting them to work for you a second time is often difficult. After they move to another job, it's difficult to get them again.

So even if you request a vendor for another job through the same outsource service, the vendor may be too busy with other jobs to work yours in. You'll have to wait until the vendor is free or select another vendor.

Disadvantages of Outsourcing: Conclusion

Outsourcing has its advantages, and many people advise new Internet marketers to use outsource services, especially for skills that they don't have or for jobs that they don't like to do.

You should give outsourcing decisions the same due consideration that you would give to hiring a new employee.
