How To Find And Cure Melanoma Skin Cancer

Jun 19, 2008
This kind of cancer affects melanocytes, or pigment-producing cells, in the skin. There are other types of skin cancer that don't spread, but melanoma is the type that can spread to other areas of the body, or metastasize. It most frequently appears on the trunk in men and on the legs in women, but it can occur anywhere on the body. Melanoma is the most serious type of cancer. Melanoma occurs when melanocytes (pigment cells) become malignant. Most pigment cells are in the skin; when melanoma starts in the skin, the disease is called cutaneous melanoma.

If you have moles that seem to grow or marks on the skin that do not seem to be fading, you should definitely seek a doctor for further examination. There's nothing like perfect timing if you try to fight cancer. If you think you have the symptoms of melanoma, your chances to cure it will depend on how soon you pay that visit to your doctor. Just remember that normal moles or skin abnormalities will not bleed, scale, or grow any bigger. Permanent marks on the body are just that permanent and will not change.

Never forget that your doctor is the right one to diagnose and treat melanoma. Treatment of melanoma starts with excision of the lesion also taking at least a 1 cm border of healthy tissue around it. If the cancer has spread to other areas of the body, the best treatment is to remove the cancerous tissue if possible. Sometimes, chemotherapy is used along with removal. The tissue will be tested, this tests should help to determine whether or not the cells are abnormal cancer cells or not.

In most cases, the treatment of melanoma skin cancer involves a fairly non invasive surgical procedure. They are not difficult to administer, and usually involve the simple removal of moles and other imperfections on the skin. Depending on how significant the cell damage is, the removal of the tissue may leave a scar on the face, and that is one of the most difficult side effects of the illness and treatment. If not diagnosed, melanoma skin cancer can get out of hand and spread to other organs of the body. By itself, it is fairly easily treated and can easily be eradicated forever.

Remember: "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of treatment" and that is the case with skin cancer. Minimizing exposure to sources of ultraviolet radiation (sun and sunbeds), following sun protection measures and wearing sun protective clothing (long-sleeved shirts, long trousers, and broad-brimmed hats) can offer protection. It can be cured if it is diagnosed and treated when the tumor is thin and has not deeply invaded the skin. However, if a melanoma is not removed at its early stages, cancer cells may grow downward from the skin surface and invade healthy tissue. When a melanoma becomes thick and deep, the disease often spreads to other parts of the body and is difficult to control.

If you check your skin regularly, you will become familiar with what is normal for you. Keep in mind that you can directly contribute to the health of your skin with proper protection and prevention. Skin cancer does not have to be a problem.
