Helpful Tips on How to Build That Sagging Self-esteem

Jun 19, 2008
Most people may not be aware of it but low self-esteem could be one of the reasons, if not the sole reason, why they are unhappy with their lives. It is very easy to overlook the important role self-esteem plays in a person's everyday dealings. On the other hand, there are those people who are acutely aware of other people's accomplishments that they end up feeling miserable for what they think as their "inabilities."

A boost in one's self-esteem is definitely a life-changing experience. More things are accomplished and boundless positive energy is transmitted by the person. Below are helpful tips on how you can build that self-esteem:

* Exercise - Exercising is a good way to release stress and build up the needed energy for the day ahead. A daily dose of exercise does not only leave us healthier and stronger but also improves our sense of well-being. Stress hormones that have accumulated in our bodies are broken down by the physical activity that we do. This, in turn, increases endorphins or the hormones responsible for increasing our energy level.

* Acknowledge a compliment that was thrown your way - For once in your life acknowledge compliments people give you. A simple smile will do or a "thank you." People who are unsure of themselves would not say anything at all instead they will ignore the compliment.

* Learn to let go of the past - Letting go of bad memories is one sure way of increasing your self-esteem. If you continue to be encumbered by bad thought and idea, it will surely come out in your outlook. When you do something which did not come out as expected, do not dwell on it instead go on with your life with the past merely serving as a lesson. With this attitude of ours, it is no wonder other people may be more forgiving of our misdeeds than our own selves.

* Surprise yourself once in a while - There are times we surprise even ourselves by doing things we have not been used to. If we do this often enough, our mood will improve and so is our self-esteem. We can immerse ourselves in something we have been wanting to do for ages now. Go on and give yourself the chance to experience new things.

* Always remind yourself of your strengths and accomplishments - This simple activity will surely make you love yourself more. When we feel that the world is against us or that nothing good has ever happened to us, remembering our strengths and accomplishments will surely cheer us up.

* Be a constructive force - Constructive force means being able to accomplish new things every day. Doing something which we may not have tried in the past is a good way to start us on the road to constructive endeavors. Being stagnant will lead us nowhere and pull us down.

* Meditate - Nothing can beat meditation. This activity will invigorate both body and mind and will leave us feeling energized and fulfilled.

* Always get that much needed sleep - A person who has a full night's sleep is a happier and more energized person than those deprived of it.
