The World Of Viruses And Bacteria

Jun 19, 2008
Cyanobacteria were essential for the developing of more complicated life forms They produced the oxygen in our atmosphere. This oxygen is needed for the much more energy efficient metabolism of mufti cellular organisms. Cyanobacteria grow in the water, where they produce much of the oxygen that we breathe. Once considered a form of algae, they are also known as blue-green algae.

Viruses invade by attaching to a cell and injecting their genes or by being swallowed up by the cell. One study cited placed 12 obese participants in a weight-loss program for a year, randomly assigning them to either a fat-restricted or carbohydrate-restricted low-calorie diet.

Researchers noted distinct differences between lean and obese participants when they monitored the type and number of bacteria found in participants? It is still possible that bacteria are transferring their DNA to us in this manner, but to find evidence, researchers would have to do a cell-by-cell search for extra DNA, particularly in bacteria-laden places like the gastrointestinal tract.

Given that the intestinal tract is chock-full of bacteria anyway, Julie Dunning Hotopp, a microbiologist at JCVI, says such a search would be like ?looking for a needle in a pile of needles.?

At first, the finding of bacteria in cores from as much as kilometers deep was discounted - explained as contamination by surface bacteria. But careful, sterile handling of core samples - for example, kept in chambers of inert gas and carefully guarded against any exposure to the surface environment - has shown that bacteria and even higher multicellular protozoa (feeding on the bacteria) live to great depths in the interior of the Earth.

This treatment could potentially prevent pathogens from proliferating to numbers capable of causing human illness. Recently Jarone Pinhassi and his colleagues discovered that marine bacteria use sunlight as a source of energy, owing to a unique light-capturing pigment, proteorhodopsin, which is found in nearly half of sea bacteria. Oceans cover about 70 percent of the earth's surface, and there is a constant exchange of carbon dioxide between the atmosphere and the sea.

Consequently, samples of the makeup water, the soil at the drill site, and drilling mud at various depths were collected and the microorganisms present were characterized with the same procedures used for those in the rock samples. Both the quantity and type of bacteria present in these samples were then compared to those observed from the rock samples.

Recent research demonstrates that these bacterial competences derive from the aptitude of viruses for natural genome editing.

This method amplifies a part of bacterial genetic material (RNA) in laboratory. Instead of growing the whole bacteria, which may be impossible, one is ?growing? bacteria?s genetic material (RNA) which is quick and easy method done with enzymes.

The lifecycle of the bacteria in the patient?s body includes infection, growth and fast reproduction. The toxins and enzymes produced by the bacteria destroy the tissues and fascia in the body and the tissues become gangrenous. TB is called the ultimate killer. It is the leading cause of death among infectious diseases in the world today and is responsible for one in four adult preventable deaths, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

The presence of fecal contamination is an indicator that a potential health risk exists for individuals exposed to this water. Fecal coliform bacteria may occur in ambient water as a result of the overflow of domestic sewage or nonpoint sources of human and animal waste.
