What Is Cancer And Why We Are Prone To It

Jun 19, 2008
Cells from cancerous tumors can spread throughout the body. This process, called metastasis, occurs when cancer cells break away from the original tumor and travel in the circulatory or lymphatic systems until they are lodged in a small capillary network in another area of the body. Cells removed from the tumor will be examined under the microscope for evidence of cancer.

Breast cancer kills fewer women each year, but it gets a lot of publicity and research funding. Lung cancer gets shrouded in blame and denial and, yes, secrecy. Breast cancer remains a significant health concern for women in the United States. In the U.S., it is the most common form of cancer in women.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among American men. It is more common among African American men than white men.

Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer affecting North American men, accounting for 28% of all newly diagnosed cancers: 317,000 in the USA and 20,000 in Canada (1997 estimate). In 1996 it caused 13% of male cancer-related deaths: 42,000 in the USA and 4,000 in Canada. Prostatitis is a benign (non life threatening) condition.

It is caused by inflammation (swelling) of the prostate. Prostate cancer screening can involve testing the amount of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) in a man's blood and/or a digital rectal exam (DRE). PSA is a product of the prostate gland; higher levels of PSA may indicate prostate cancer, among other things.

Medical information changes rapidly and while Yahoo! No health information on Yahoo!, including information about herbal therapies and other dietary supplements, is regulated or evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and therefore the information should not be used to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease without the supervision of a medical doctor.

Medical oncologists have a thorough knowledge of how cancers behave and grow. This knowledge is used to calculate your risk of recurrence as well as the possible need for and benefits of additional or adjuvant therapy (such as chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, or bone marrow transplantation).

Medical management of cancer has improved in the last decade, but management of mental health issues has lagged, according to the authors. Studies show that depressive symptoms can even impact patients' lives even more than pain.

Tumor cells from patients who develop secondary resistance to a drug like Tarceva after an initial response on therapy did not have mutations in KRAS. The story is the same as for Erbitux and Iressa. Tumors can be benign (not cancer) or malignant (cancer).

Cancer is a group of more than 100 different diseases that are due to abnormal growth of body cells. The human body is made up of billions of tiny cells that reproduce themselves by dividing.

Cancer is the result of uncontrolled cell growth . A normal cell contains factors which tell it when to divide. Cancer is humbling because it makes you realise how little you really control. I ran around like a self-important guard dog for years, yapping and jumping and fretting, thinking I really made things happen. Cancer is expected to become the nation's biggest killer within a decade, surpassing heart disease.
