Search Engine Optimization, How To Get Started

Jun 19, 2008
Optimizing your website is not difficult to do and something that everyone who has a site needs to start doing to be found. Page optimization refers to search engine optimization techniques used directly in the construction of web pages. It is important to provide visitors to your website with valuable content that makes them want to come back to your site again and again. That' why SEO is not just engine optimization but optimizing the page for human readers.

Monitoring your use of keywords is important, as well as making sure your website's content is indispensable. Stay away from keyword stuffing for it not only makes your website appear to be unintelligent and unprofessional but because search engines have caught on they penalize for the overuse of keywords. The goal is using keywords realistically and prudently. Keywords are often solely used to attract web search traffic.

Despite the fact that customary SEO recognizes an ideal of 2-7% keyword density for page optimization, Google has changed their systems to suggest that a 1-2% density may be more ideal (simpler to read). Create a list of the most commonly utilized search words that relate to the subject and subtopics you are using and put them within the confines of your site. Google's latent semantic index (LSI) will also reward you for the use of similar phrases.

Do not limit keywords within your page content. It is imperative that one includes the chosen keywords in their title pages. Search engines recognize the content of one's pages mostly based on the words that are utilized in the title pages. Unless you use keywords in your page titles, it will be necessary to include many more alternate links that point to your webpage in order to encourage people to visit your website. When using keywords in the titles of your work, put them close to the beginning of your title and make sure that it is able to be read. To optimize search results, there should always be a title page.

Each individual page on your website needs page title of its own that is unique and relatively short and uses the main keywords for that particular page. Note search engines limit characters displayed in search results. Use your keywords in the title upto three times maximum and one will be sufficient for most of them.

Meta tags is a term you may read about when reading about "on page optimization" but because it was widely abused by spam, search engines don't acknowledge them. There are very few SEO professionals who continue to depend on meta tags for web page optimization. If you decide to go ahead, make sure you only use meta keywords and descriptions so that these words and phrases show up on the page and are not going to be considered spam.

Linking your site to other similar pages will drastically increase your search engine marketability. All supported links should be genuine and point to sites with content that add value to visitors. Page optimization is not hard to institute and given that you offer the visitors to your site excellent and relevant content, it will largely benefit the success you will have with the search engines.
