Latest Airline Surcharges and Regulations

Jun 20, 2008
So much has changed in the way we travel in recent years. Since 2001 and the events of 9/11 we saw many security features improved, including screening, and what is considered to be acceptable to bring with you on vacation. Now, on top of all of the security changes, we are witnessing yet another change, and that is in the airline fares. If you are a frequent flyer, you have probably already noticed the significant increase in prices for tickets. This is due to the overwhelming current price of fuel.

The airlines are in trouble financially and they simply must increase fares. In addition they have added a fuel surcharge to every ticket. Although this charge has been added in the past, we are seeing large increases to this charge today.

For example, the major airline in the US has charged an additional twenty dollars on a roundtrip, on top of what you were paying before. You will witness many other airlines following suit. Unfortunately, this will not change anytime soon. As long as the price of fuel stays high, we will see the fuel surcharges increasing along with gas prices.

Another thing that has changed with flying is baggage. It used to be that you could take one carry-on, and two pieces of larger baggage. You weren't always charged for the second piece, but get ready to start paying for all baggage. This is really a dire situation. Who will want to fly if it is this expensive? The good thing is that some airlines are not doing this, and therefore are advertising a lower fare with no baggage fees. What we will likely see is this occurring much more frequently. Until either no one charges baggage fees or everyone does.

It's all about the price of fuel. Right now if you can travel light, you save money. People will have to make more choices when they travel, including what airline to take, day of week, time of day, amount of luggage needed, etc.

If you are thinking about traveling then it is a good idea to check the Transportation Security Administration website before you pack your bags. There have been a number of significant changes, particularly in terms of bringing liquids on the plane. However, we will go over them quickly, but if you were concerned about a particular item then it would be a good idea to check with them first.

The biggest change is the ability to take liquids, gels, or aerosols on the plane. For a while you were not allowed to bring any of these on the plane, but recently the TSA and travelers have come to consensus that that is just not an option. For the children and elderly travelers, who require medications and nourishment, the rules are a lot more lenient.

The new rule is all liquids; gels and aerosols must be in 3-ounce containers or smaller. They all must be kept in a single quart size zip-loc bag. This bag must be removed from your carry-on and screened through security for easier access. The reason for this change is that there have been recent threats associated with liquids, so it is for all of our safety.
