Things The Kids Should Know Before They Start Cooking

Jun 21, 2008
Who wouldn't like some help at hand while cooking in their kitchen. And who would fit better into the picture than your kids? Giving them some lessons in cooking will not only teach them how to cook for themselves when you are not around, but also make them more responsible and methodical.

But before you embark on the journey of teaching them cooking, you should first teach them the importance of cleanliness. Kids should understand why to keep their hands clean and hair tied or covered, not to lick fingers while cooking, keeping the raw and cooked vegetables separate. This will also help in keeping illnesses at bay. It is also very important to teach them why not to cook food at very high or low temperatures.

Discuss the entire recipe with the kids before you all start cooking. This will ensure that you don't miss out on anything and that all the ingredients are in place and the entire cooking process goes on smoothly. Try to stick to the exact procedure for the best results.

Explain the kids every equipment and their functions and use in the kitchen. Teach them about how to use which hand appliance and where. Also teach them how to operate them safely, you don't have to tell them how current works.

Teach the kids why hot pads are important in the kitchen. It is also important for them to understand why they should not taste food from a hot spoon or put a finger in hot food. Kids must understand that at all times they should take maximum precaution so as to protect themselves from any kind of burn injury. Kids should also be taught how to remove hot trays in from the oven and also what to do in case of a burn injury in the kitchen.

Keep the knives sharpened so that any cutting work can be done quickly without any hassles. Also dull knives can be quite dangerous as they slip rather than cutting the surface of the vegetables.

The kids should be taught about why not to put water in fire and to immediately call for adults, neighbors and 911 in case of any emergency.

The kids should be aware of the health problems that can be caused by semi-cooked food and even by tasting it. Also taste food with a different spoon every time you have to.

While the food gets cooked, use that time to clean up the kitchen of any leftovers or spillovers or anything left on the kitchen counter from the cooking ingredients. If the cooking time is more, wash the utensils. After the food gets cooked or while it is on the stove, turn off any electrical appliance that you are not using.

Let your children cook a little right from the beginning so that at a later stage in life they can cook for themselves when need arises and not rely on junk food.
