Jun 21, 2008
Dachshund is an intelligent hound dog having willful and sturdy personality. The common features are short legs, long body, long drooping ears and sleek coat. They are also called as "Teckel". They come in three different sizes, miniature, toy and standard. They can be wired haired, shorthaired or even longhaired.

Dachshunds are typically stubborn and independent. With rewarding-method and constant training they can better be transformed into a fully mature sociable breed. Training dachshunds need considerable diligence and patience. Dachshund obedience training includes socializing with strangers and house training. Since they belong to hunting breed, they require proper training for getting along with various types of pet animals like cats, birds etc.

Dachshund obedience training requires extensive desensitizing instruction in order to overcome suspicious behavior on outsiders. At a very early age, dachshund should be socialized and trained. Only adult dachshunds require vigorous training. It is important to treat Dachshunds like one's own children. As they hardly respond to harsh training methods, the training sessions should be food based and game oriented.

Eye contact is the most important factor in dachshunds training. Whenever they perform well, they should be praised generously with tasty and nice rewards. Well planned and designed exercises should be introduced in Dachshund obedience training which results in great and amazing changes in the behavior of dachshunds. Only when a proper training is provided, dachshund obeys walking rules; otherwise it is hard to control them while taking them for a walk.

Based on materials, styles and lengths, different types of leashes are available that suit the purpose and taste of owner. Appropriate selection of a right leash for the dog is based on the size, strength and personality of the dog.

Dog muzzle becomes a great rescuer when the dog has the habit of biting. To avoid unwanted barking and biting, the muzzle should be placed over snout of the dog to prevent them from biting and barking. A strong buckle or fastening device can act as a muzzle. Collar is most often used for the purpose of identification, fashion, and control. It would be better if the collar is neither loose nor too tight. At least four fingers should enter between the neck of the dog and the collar.

Internet or CDs available in pet stores are the best tools to learn tips and instructions for dachshunds training. Clicker can be used during Dachshund Training. Clicker is a plastic box of small size with an onside metal tongue. When tongue is pushed and released, clicker makes clicking and sharp noise. Clicker is faster than the time taken to pronounce 'good dog'.

Treat is an important tool in the training. During the course of training, the dog loves to have food. Another important tool during the Dachshund obedience training is the leash, which can be used for teaching commands like lie down, heal and sit. The leash should be very strong to withstand the dog. Comprehensive learning programmes are provided by numerous training schools for the purpose of Dachshund obedience training.
