Learning How to Use a Tongue Scraper

Jun 21, 2008
They're just little tools that anyone can use, but some people are confused about how to use a tongue scraper. Do you do this after you brush, before you brush, with toothpaste or just a dry scraper, or what?

But it's important to learn how to use a tongue scraper properly so that you don't cause permanent damage to your tongue or your mouth overall, not to mention keeping yourself from unnecessary pain!

Learning how to use a tongue scraper is easy. No matter how you choose to use your tongue scraper, it can still be effective in eliminating bad breath if you are able to remove leftover food particles from your tongue. Some of us like the tongue scraper to be dry whereas others prefer it wet. A lot of that depends on your sensitivity with your tongue and your gag reflex.

When learning how to use a tongue scraper you might want to start with it being moist and with some toothpaste. Be gentle so that you don't make yourself gag or hurt your tongue.

A tongue scraper is different than a brush. While a brush requires a swirling motion, a scraper needs you to be gentle when scraping. Keep in mind that your tongue is very sensitive and you do not want to hurt your tongue when you are scraping away your germs and plaque.

Most people use the tongue scraper after they brush their teeth. Of course, you can do it before brushing. The important thing is that you have to rinse your mouth thoroughly when using a tongue scraper. You may even consider using an antiseptic mouthwash to rinse those food particles from your mouth.

If you leave them in your mouth they'll just resettle back on your tongue or on your teeth and gum lines. It does no good to learn how to use a tongue scraper if you then leave all that gunk and other elements in your mouth! So be sure you rinse thoroughly, whether you use the scraper after brushing or before.

Be gentle with yourself when learning how to use a tongue scraper and don't just rush in and start scraping. Be gentle especially at first and gradually work your way up to a comfortable level of pressure for best results and to keep yourself from injury.
