Friendly Potty Training

Jun 22, 2008
Your kid is growing and it's time to start leaving the diapers. The potty training must be a smooth and positive process since it's a very sensitive moment for children. That's the time when they begin the transition from babies to toddlers.

This stage of children development is also the period when they start to try their independence. However, it's still a long way until they can completely do things on their own and that's why they will need lots of parent's assistance. In what concerns to potty training we recommend positive support and patience to the parents as an effective way to make children establish their individuality. Here are some tips on how to help your children during the potty training stage:

*Get a colorful and fun potty to make your kid feel interested on it. Place it on the bathroom in a way it can tease his curiosity. Asking him to sit on it and telling him tales you will make him become more familiar to the potty and ready to move to the next round.

*Empty the dirty diapers into the potty telling the child the potty is the place where the poop should go. Kids usually find it funny to flush the toilet and you can use this moment to make up a nice story to explain where the poop goes after flushed.

*Tell tales about using the potty to your toddler before and during the potty training. There is a great range of educational books available which works out this subject. If he starts to make question, give him sincere answers.

*Praise your child every time he or she uses the potty. Avoid making comparisons between your child and other kids. Compliment the child for doing what he or she is expected to do without going to far on it, otherwise your child may start to feel pressured.

*Be positive if an accident happens, telling him it happens to anyone, and that he will do it in the potty next time.

* A reward scheme can be very helpful as a way to tease your child to use the potty. Colorful stickers, golden stars, little toys or a extra fairytale at bedtime can also be a nice incentive.

* Let your child choose a piece of underwear in a store and only allow him to use it when the potty use becomes regular. It's a good strategy to make kids run to the bathroom every time they need to. They won't want to get the new underwear soiled!

Don't get frustrated if it takes a bit of time to your child to learn to use the potty. The key to a smooth potty training is to make it the less intimidating for the child by supporting and praising. Positive attitude will help you and your child to pass easily for this moment of teaching and learning about independence.
