Messages in Water: Emoto's Findings

Jun 23, 2008
There are many ways to look at water. It is a chemical compound of Hydrogen and Oxygen (even most people who flunked, or never took chemistry probably know the symbol for water is H2O); it is the most pervasive substance on the planet and in our bodies; it is an element in both Western and Eastern schools of alchemy and astrology; next to air, it's the most essential thing our bodies require to survive.

All of this suggests that water is very fundamental to our existence, and to life in general. The fact that drinking pure water, and in sufficient quantities, is essential to health should be no surprise. What may be surprising are the recent findings of Masaru Emoto, whose book, The Message From Water, has created a whole new understanding of water and its place in our lives.

Emoto's findings, which were mentioned in the popular documentary, What the Bleep Do We Know, came from freezing droplets of water and then photographing them with a special microscope. What he found is that water is not a neutral, impersonal element, but a living energy field that responds to the vibrations around it. The crystalline structure of water changes dramatically based on the location, purity and, most incredibly, the words and thoughts of the people nearby.

While this sounds mystical and even bizarre at first, it is backed by extensive research. If you look at the photographs in one of Emoto's books, you don't have to be a mystic or a chemist to see the vast differences. Water from unpolluted streams and rivers has a bright, jewel-like appearance. Water from polluted areas has a dull, metallic or sickly color and shape.

Emoto is probably best known for his discovery that water responds to words, prayers and intentions. It is especially receptive to words like "love" and gratitude." It also responds differently to different kinds of music. Discordant music, like heavy metal, has a "polluting" effect on it, while classical and harmonic music has a positive effect.

These discoveries have many fascinating and important implications to science, philosophy and many other fields. Yet they also have more practical things to teach us. Not long ago, studies were published showing the power of prayer on plants. If water, one of the most basic resources of our planet, is also responsive to words and intentions, that says something very basic about our world. Namely, that our minds are connected to the natural world and can have either a positive or negative impact upon it.

Getting even more practical, everyone has the ability to "charge" water. Some people bless food before eating it, but it is probably even more important to do this with water. Another of Emoto's findings should be mentioned here. Distilled water, which is, technically, the "purest" water you can get, does not have a healthy appearance in Emoto's photos. This is probably because distillation is an unnatural process that de-mineralizes water. While certainly preferable to highly toxic water, distilled water should only be consumed in extreme circumstances.

It is not clear whether highly polluted water would be responsive to the kind of "charging" Emoto speaks of. It is, no doubt, best to use the purest water you can find. In any case, there seems to be little doubt that you can make any water you consume healthier and more beneficial.
