Alternative Cancer Treatment - Reducing Your Breast Cancer Risk

Jun 23, 2008
About one in twelve women will develop breast cancer sometime in her life. There are numerous risk factors for contracting breast cancer, some within your control and some that are not. Fortunately, for those factors that are in your control, no great sacrifice is required to minimize them.

Eating a healthy diet is the first, and in many ways the easiest, step. There's considerable evidence to suggest that diet does alter the odds. While there's nothing you eat that will produce breast cancer, nor anything you can eat to prevent it, some foods are helpful, others less so.

Since one leading theory indicates that breast cancer is, if not caused by at least encouraged by, free radicals in the blood, eating foods rich in antioxidants is a good idea. Free radicals are charged ions, usually oxygen, that can do damage to cells. Antioxidants chemically combine with these active molecules to render them harmless. There's ample evidence to suggest that eating foods rich in antioxidants lowers the risk of breast cancer.

The consumption of green vegetables works perfectly for this purpose, but there are other foods that will aid also. For example both strawberries and apples will aid you. Drinking red wines in moderation and additionally green teas will assist you in reducing your risk for breast cancer, as they are both rich in antioxidants.

Another risk factor which you can personally control is exercise. With diet it helps to increase your overall health but it also aids in smoothing the hormone levels thus providing other health values. If you do contract breast cancer then being in good shape helps you to get the most out of any treatments you might have to undergo.

Progesterone and Estrogen (mainly) are believed to affect the risk of contracting breast cancer. These two hormones are natural and required for your health. Unfortunately having an excessive amount of these hormones present can increase your breast cancer risk. Both of these hormones are stored in your fat tissues. If you exercise regularly and eat right you will reduce your body fat percentage, thus reducing these hormone levels.

Heightened levels of alcohol use will increase the risk of cancer. Generally, alcohol has a negative effect on your health and also increases your estrogen levels. Alcohol can also interfere with your body's natural mechanism for using antioxidants.

Consuming a glass of wine a day is said to be beneficial. Even a small drink containing hard alcohol is said to be beneficial. You must keep in mind however that for every 10 grams of alcohol an individual consumes over a lengthy period of time they are increasing their risk of contracting breast cancer by 10%.

The reduction of the number of menstrual periods that a person experiences has been proven to aid in the reduction of the individual's risk of contracting breast cancer. This occurs simply because it alters the person's hormone levels. It hasn't been determined if whether or not taking oral birth controls contribute to the cancer risk. There isn't any evidence currently to suggest that using birth control over a long period of time is harmful. New pills may be made available that completely eliminate the female menstrual cycle.

Pregnancy, of course, is another way of reducing the risk of breast cancer but it has its own set of risks for other problems, of course. For those who wish to bear children, however, having them before age 30 has been correlated with a lower risk of breast cancer.

While there is no magic bullet, a healthy lifestyle is your best preventative. Even if you do contract the disease, better health gives you a much better chance of detecting and eliminating it early. Those in good health have much better chances of full recovery and long term survival.
