Tips for Renting a Holiday Villa in Crete

Jun 23, 2008
Crete is the largest of all the Greek Islands, yet is only the fifth largest one to be found in the Mediterranean Sea. Of all the islands which form Greece this is one of those where visitors will return year after year so that they can further explore what the island has to offer.

Getting to Crete has improved and today there are three airports on the island where flights from all over Europe come into, they are Heraklion, Akrotiri and Sitia. Plus there are two major ports on the island which are often used by many cruise liners as a port of call as they cruise around the Mediterranean. The great thing about the airports is that they are located within easy travelling distance of all the islands major resorts.

Along with over 1,000km of coastline for visitors to enjoy there is plenty more for these people to do and see whilst staying on Crete. Unlike a number of the other islands in the Mediterranean, Crete is extremely mountainous.

To the west of the island you will find the White Mountain (Lefka Ori) which reaches to a height of 2,453m. Then in the center of the island is Mount Idi (Psiloritis) which reaches a height of 2,456m and is the tallest of all the islands mountains. Then on the eastern end of the island you will find Mount Dikti which reaches a height of 2,148m. It is these mountains along with the Cretan Mountains which run from one end of the island to the other make it look much larger than it really is.

To get away from the hustle and bustle of the beaches during the summer head up to Lake Kournas and just take in its splendid vistas. At the same as you wander around the shores of the lake why not stop and take a rest in one of its many taverns.

Generally, most people will visit Crete during the summer months but the temperatures between July and August can be incredibly hot. In fact the temperatures throughout these months reach well up to 40 degrees Centigrade (100 degrees Fahrenheit). Also actually finding room on any beach during this time of the year can prove fairly difficult.

Really if you want to avoid all the hustle and bustle and still enjoy great weather the ideal time to visit Crete is in October. You will still be blessed with plenty of sunshine but also the temperatures at this time of year are a little more agreeable as well.

But as well as spending time relaxing on Crete's beaches there are plenty of historical sites that one can visit as well. The main ones that many tourists visit when they come to Crete are Knossos Palace and Phaestos Palace. Both of which provide you with a clear insight in the kinds of people the Minoans were who originally inhabited this beautiful Greek island.
