Getting Better at Poker

Jun 24, 2008
If you like to play poker and you play a lot of it then you must always be on the lookout for ways that you can make you make better. Knowing pot odds, reading books, going through online tutorials, and there are far more tools out there that can be used for improving your poker game. Playing in as many live games as possible and playing as many hands as you can, can be a good way to get better at playing poker. The more you play the better you will understand that game of poker.

When developing your poker game you must try to develop a game that is going to be feared and respected by other players. To do this you will need to develop a poker education that is rivaled by none. To start this education go to your local libraries or book stores and grab as many poker books as you can and read them all from cover to cover. There are a multitude of professional poker players who write books that will lay out the exact strategies that they use to consistently win at poker. Learn what they do and try to incorporate it into your game.

Each different poker player has their strengths and weaknesses and these must be discovered in each player. To discover your own you must try using as many different skills and strategies as possible when playing a live poker game. You may lose some money right away when starting to play this way but when you discover what skills work for you and at what times you will start to make a lot more money and win more hands then you ever have before.

Another thing that can be used while in the process of learning that game of poker is the tutorial. These tutorials are found all over the internet and a lot of them are available for free. Using tutorials is a good way to be interactive while learning the game and is unlike a book where you just read, so it can help with the boredom factor.

Being able to figure out pot odds and hand odds on the fly is a skill that simply cannot be overlooked. To become an expert at this skill one must study thousands of hands and be able to do a little bit of math in their head fast. Memorizing what percentage you have to make a draw that will save your hand is so important as this will tell you weather you want to call a bet, raise, or if you want to bluff. Learning this skill alone would be enough to turn a losing player to at the very least a player who will break even.

Lastly, watching the pros play on television is a good way to pick up on some of the subtleties of poker. Watch how the professional players study the other players. They are not only studying other players trying to glean information from them they are also doing their best to try to intimidate them and push the other players into making mistakes or giving away the relative strength or weakness of their hands.
