Interpreting Body Fat Percentage Charts Today

Jun 24, 2008
My doctor says I'm not, but when I looked at my results on a body fat percentage chart, I felt overweight. Why they are still being used when based on a thinner population decades ago is up for discussion. Still, they hold pretty true to where you should be if your body is to function healthy.

I knew that wasn't the right answer. So I set off on a quest and found that, yes, even though you want them to say you are healthier - body fat percentage charts are fairly accurate. All you need is your height and weight and how old you are and look down the scale to see where you should be.

My issue with this is that the guys I know my age are so varied in their body build. Some are tubby; others are toothpicks. So how can this chart be a one size fits all affair? Scientifically we know that we gain fat around our organs as we age. This visceral fat as it's called is not something that shows up when measured using calipers.

I also found out, well, reinstated because I already knew and it was good to hear again, that when losing body fat, you want to make sure you don't lose muscle tissue as well. Some loss is normal, but we all want to burn fat and leave the muscle intact. And quick weight loss by fat burning is possible. I've done it.

But before you read the body fat percentage chart and think you're doomed because you're off-scale, take a deep breath and relax. You may be just fine. Women by nature have more fat than men. Some tissue, like the breasts, are almost all fat. And there is fat around the hips that men don't normally have. Women need this fat.

I'm not that old, but am at the point where it is much more difficult to get back into shape than when I was young. I could eat a dozen pancakes and not worry. Today, I get through one and it feels like I've gained three pounds. You know the feeling. That's why we're told to take care of our bodies when we're young. But young is wasted on the youth. We pay for it later.

Since these percentages on the body fat percentage charts are from decades old data, you may be OK if you see you're just off the scale. However, like I mentioned, if you don't feel healthy and feel that it may be because of your body fat, I strongly suggest getting the advice of a doctor and getting into a program like I did to quickly lose body fat and start feeling healthier, clarity of mind.

I also studied these programs, around 30 of them that are out there on the Internet and in the library, and about 90 percent of them are just junk. Yes, there are some good tips in each one, but what I wanted was a system - a strategy to help me lose fat and keep it off. I mean, what to do on day one, etc. These programs do exist and they are effective.
