Flood Damage Cleanup Made Easy

Jun 24, 2008
Cleaning up after a flood can be a daunting and terribly expensive task, especially if you do not know what items are salvageable and which ones are not. Informing yourself before the cleanup begins (or even before the flood comes if you live in a flood prone area) will help you save a lot of money by keeping you from throwing things that you can save out.

There are a lot of things that will not be feasible to try and save after a flood. This can include couches, chairs, cushions, and basically anything that has stuffing inside it, including children's toys. The reason for this is that flood waters often contain all kinds of bacteria and other forms of filth, including sewage and hazardous chemicals.

Once it soaks into foam rubber, it cannot be cleaned because the material is so very porous. The best thing to do is remove the foam rubber from the cushions that you find, wash the covers, and throw the foam rubber away. Re-stuff the covers with new foam rubber after if you want, but many people find that it is simpler to just get rid of the whole couch and get a new one. It really depends on what is most convenient for you to do.

Any towels and other things that did not come directly into contact with the flood water can still turn moldy after a few days of being left inside a flooded home because of the high humidity inside, especially if the weather is hot. These items can usually be salvaged, but might be a little unsightly due to mold stains that are hard to remove.

This can also be a problem with any clothing that you left in your home when you evacuated. Clothing is often molded and stained after a flood, but this is a problem that can often be remedied in a short period of time by washing them thoroughly; wash these items at least twice. You will want to take them to a Laundromat, since the washer in your home could have electrical damage due to the flood waters.

Any carpet that you have can possibly be cleaned, but the padding underneath it needs to be completely removed and replaced because like the foam rubber in cushions, once contaminated with mold, sewage, or chemicals, it cannot be cleaned; if you try to clean it, it will simply shred.

Any pure leather items in your home that became molded are not likely to be able to return to their previous condition because they are made of skin, which is porous and difficult to clean.
