Bringing Your Pets on That Holiday Trip

Jun 25, 2008
Traveling with your favorite pet need not be a cumbersome task. If you are planning to take your pet on that trip you have long been waiting for, then be sure to make all arrangements early on so that your trip will not be ruined. Be very familiar also with the pet you are taking with you to prevent untoward incidents happening on that trip.

1. It is important that you are very familiar with your pet and all of his habits. Animals are like people in some aspects. Animals may be prone to motion sickness just like humans. The best way to avoid this during the trip is to train your pet to ride a vehicle. You may do this by driving around the neighborhood with your him.

2. Visit your veterinarian and explain to him the nature of your travel and the preparations you have been doing together with your pet. Ask for any tips he might be able to impart.

3. Arm yourself with information regarding the trip you are going to take-the transportation, accommodation, food, companions, and other important information. There are hotels nowadays which cater to pet owners and their pets. There are hotel amenities specifically built for pets. If you do not know any of these hotels, you may try surfing the internet and look if they are situated near your travel destination. You may also try searching in your local libraries for listings.

4. Bbe sure to make your pet feel comfortable during the entire trip. Bring along items he is familiar with such as pet carriers, toys, and other familiar items from home. Your pet will surely feel more at ease.

5. People who are not used to traveling often have difficulty when they board a vehicle. Dizziness and vomiting most of the times ruin their trip. This is also true for animals. To avoid such incidents, refrain from feeding your pets anything solid or liquid prior to boarding. This is true at least 30min before boarding.

6. If you have your own car and you are at the wheel, remember to pace your travel so that there will be enough rest periods in between. This is important so that your pet will have time to stretch and relax. You may look for a park within the area. You may also take this time to feed him before another long trip.

Additional tips:

- Get a written clearance from your veterinarian prior to the day of the trip. This will surely come handy in case something arise unexpectedly.

- Be very sure that your pet has all the necessary shots AND is tagged accordingly. This is helpful for pet identification.

- Make sure that once you start the trip, your pet is properly fastened and within seeing or hearing distance.

To avoid occurrence of any untoward incident with your pet, be sure to plan your trip ahead not only with your accommodations in mind but also your pet's as well.
