Do You Want To Prevent Mold And Water Damage To Your Home?

Jun 25, 2008
Everybody knows that mold in your home can cause all kinds of physical ailments, but not everyone knows which rooms in their home are the most predisposed to having mold problems. There are quite a few of them and if you do not take the proper precautions, you could have a mold problem in your own home in a very short period of time. It only takes 24 to 48 hours after introducing moisture to an area of the home for mold to start growing.

One of the most important rooms to take care of when it comes to mold is the bathroom. This is a wet room simply by nature and if you do not take care of it, mold can become very prevalent here in a very short time period. The first thing you want to take notice of is what flooring you have in the bathroom. You should never, ever use carpet in the bathroom of your house, since it will be wet on an almost continuous basis (especially if you have a full house) and will become molded quickly. Remove this and put down either tile, stone, or vinyl flooring and make sure that it is sealed with caulking so the water that comes into contact with the floor does not make its way to the sub-floor. Water coming into contact with your sub-floor will cause it to rot and I do not think that anyone wants to be in the middle of taking a bath and the tub collapse to the ground below or worse, the living area below.

You also want to make sure that your washing machine and dishwasher are in good repair and if they overflow or leak often, you want to get them replaced as soon as possible. Think about what it will cost in the long run to repair the damage to your floor caused by these incidents and you will probably agree that it would be cheaper to just replace the appliance.

In any room of your home that water passes through, whether it is the bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room, you will want to have an exhaust fan installed. This will allow the steam that accumulates in those rooms to escape to the outside of your home instead of being absorbed into the ceiling and upper walls. Even if you have a window to keep open, this is not always the most practical solution to letting steam out of the room because it will not all be able to escape. An exhaust fan located on the ceiling is optimum.
