Your Child And Head Lice Treatments

Jun 25, 2008
It's a horrible feeling when you find your child has become infested with head lice. One thing that often gets over looked in the rush to find the perfect louse killing treatment is how your child will react to being treated. A certain amount of cooperation from your little darling is needed for the outcome to be successful.

Maybe you're blessed with a child who is happy to sit still while you apply your chosen remedy, wait for it work and then have the dead lice combed out. Unfortunately many of us aren't and a bit of pre-planning will be required.

Cooperation seems to rely a lot on factors such as the age of the child and whether or not you have a girl or a boy. If your little one is a turbulent two year old who is going through the 'no' stage then you'll have the most difficulty. The older the child is the greater the chance to reason with them.

When treating a child it's important that you don't allow the situation to become a battlefield. You'll need to treat them at least twice and sometimes a lot more before the infestation is gone. If the first time is bad the second will probably be worse.

First of all explain what's going to happen. Even quite young children can understand the basics. Keep the tone very light hearted and make jokes about it if possible. If you've ever had head lice yourself now is a good time to tell them all about it.

Some over-the-counter products only need to be left on the hair for 10 to 30 minutes after being applied. The best way to keep children occupied is to read them their favourite books or put on a CD and sing along. Having a clock or a timer they can look at will also help them see that the boring wait is almost over.

Many other treatments, especially ones based on home remedies, involve keeping the hair covered for several hours. It's actually easier for both of you if they have keep their hair wrapped all night while they sleep rather than just for two or three hours during the day.

If you've decided on a treatment that involves keeping the hair covered for only a couple of hours you'll need to do something distracting that isn't too boisterous. Treatments like mayonnaise or olive oil can leave difficult to remove marks on your furniture if the head covering comes astray. Having a meal, watching a DVD or doing some crafts or painting can help fill in the time. Make sure you plan this bit in advance to maximise the distraction and minimise the mess.

Whatever head lice method you use there will be combing involved. A lot of kids aren't keen on having their hair combed even when there are no lice involved. Working quickly but methodically is the key and try not to stick the teeth of the comb into the scalp if you want to avoid loudly voiced complaints. Counting the number of lice you comb out seems to fascinate a lot of children and turning it all into a game is a good solution.
