What To Do About Water Stains

Jun 26, 2008
Most of the time when we talk about water damage, it is usually concerning something that water has made wet or had prolonged contact with. This kind of water damage usually comes from flooding or leaking of some kind. These kinds of problems can destroys things, be costly to repair, and take a lot of energy to fix.

There is another problem that can be caused by water. You can get stains from rust, lime scale, and nasty soap scum. These water stains come from the minerals and other deposits found in your water. They are not as severe as other water damage, but can be annoying and unpleasant to look at. These three things can build up on the things that water is supposed to come in contact with like your bathtub, toilet, faucets, and sinks.

Lime scale, rust stains and soap scum on these surfaces are very aggravating because they can be really stubborn and hard to remove. Even when you do get them clean, they keep coming back. This kind of staining is caused by hard water build up. It is not the water, but what is in it that is the problem. Hard water usually has an abundance of minerals in it like iron, calcium, and magnesium.

When hard water is combined with soap that is allowed to dry, this can cause the hard dried soap scum that is like cement to remove. These minerals will attach themselves to almost any surface that gets wet by hard water. After a time, they will build up and leave a white hardened scale anywhere they have been. Regular wiping down and most of the time pretty fierce rubbing will not remove this build up once it has a good hold on a surface.

There are some things you can do to get rid of these stains and keep them gone. This will definitely take some special cleaning solutions and some hard scrubbing, as well, the first time they are removed. Don't use chlorine bleach as it can set in rust stains. Get a product that contains diluted hydrochloric acid. Be sure not to mix hydrochloric acid with bleach. Follow instructions very carefully and use a toilet brush with nylon bristles as you attack these stains.

Lime-away is a stronger cleaning product. This can be used to clean scale deposits on faucets. It is a good idea to clean the screens inside the faucet too. You can do this with Lime-away. Another way to remove the deposits from the faucet screens is to soak them overnight in vinegar, then rinse them and replace them in the faucet. This will make the water flow better and the faucets shine.

Now let's deal with cleaning all these water stains from the bathtub or shower. Liquid comet or lime-away are good products to use for the stains in the bathtub or shower. These products will need to be rinsed thoroughly. It is a good idea to soak shower heads in vinegar overnight to remove build-up and increase water flow. When these hard water stains are removed, make sure to wipe all the surfaces down while they are still wet.

Now that the water stains have been removed and your toilets, bathtubs, sinks, and faucets are shiny and clean it would be wise to keep them this way. This can be achieved through regular cleaning with a product like Scrubbing Bubbles. This will help keep them from getting built-up again and reduce the amount of effort you have to put into scrubbing.
