Things To Know About Your German Shepherd Breeder

Jun 26, 2008
You and your family have made your decision and plan to get a German Shepherd as the new family pet. Now that you have made that decision the time has come for an even more important decision and that is choosing the right German Shepherd breeder for you and your family. This part of the process is extremely important so take it very seriously and make sure you do a thorough check of all the available breeders before you settle on just one.

Right off the bat you are going to have to accept the fact that you will have to talk to more than one breeder. Do not just find one breeder's name and go with that one breeder. Your relationship with your breeder is extremely important. It is vital that you are comfortable with and feel like you can talk to your breeder because you will be asking for a lot of advice.

Almost all reputable German Shepherd breeders are listed with one of the national breeder registries. The main United States registry is the American Kennel Club but there are other registries as well that have just as acceptable standards. Check out the breeding standards of the registry they belong to and see how they might affect you. If the breeder you are talking to is not listed with a registry then ask why and then ask what they use for breeding standards if they do not subscribe to the standards of a registry.

A good breeder does not allow you to leave with your new pup empty handed. A good breeder is going to supply you with a lot of care and feeding information that is vital to the health and well being of your dog. A good breeder will also see to it that you leave with a sample of your dog's food so that you know what to feed your dog. If you do not get these things from the breeder you are dealing with then you will want to question that.

In some cases insurance companies see opportunity with the more reputable German Shepherd breeders and they give these breeders free pet insurance policies to give to new pup owners. The policies are for six weeks and should help cover some of the cost of your first vet appointment.

If you like the policy the insurance company hopes you renew it, the German Shepherd breeder will just be happy to offer you a free policy that helps you with those vet bills, which even for a new puppy can be outrageous.

If you and your breeder do not get along then you chose the wrong breeder. That is why it is so important to spend time talking to a lot of breeders until you find one that you feel like you really click with and can talk to.

If you feel comfortable and able to talk to a breeder then you may have found your breeder, but if you are not comfortable then you will need to move on because a breeder will be in your dog's life for years and a good relationship is very important.
