Tips for Hiring a Wedding Planner

Aug 17, 2007
Weddings are happy but extremely stressful events to organize. They have become more extravagant and it takes almost a fulltime job to plan the perfect day. That is why many couples are looking to hire a wedding planner to assist them in planning their wedding. The planner can eliminate or minimize the stress, but you have to make sure you hire a qualified and capable professional who knows all the ins and outs of this business. The wedding planning business has increased in popularity and is a booming business. This has brought a lot of new wedding consultants to the business and not all consultants are qualified. Therefore it is very important to carefully screen potential planners and to choose one who has the experience and resources necessary to plan your day so that it meets and exceeds all of your expectations.

Experience and recommendations are important factors. There is one other thing that is also very important when choosing one and that is that he or she must give you a certain degree of comfort. If you are not comfortable with your wedding planner communication can be a problem. During the planning of the wedding and making appointments you will need to talk a lot with this person. Difficult decision need to be made that meet your standards and criteria. The planner and you need to connect with each other in some way that makes it easier to choose items that you will like. Therefore hiring the one with the best resume and recommendation could not be the one for you if you don't feel comfortable working with him or her.

When you have narrowed your potential list down and feel comfortable with them you can move on to the next step. The next step is reviewing their resume and references. While some professionals who are new to the business may be extremely qualified and capable you are still taking a chance if you opt for one with little or no experience. The professional who has assisted in the planning of numerous weddings similar in scale and budget to your own is a good indication that he or she will be able to meet your needs. Carefully check of the references, they can also shed some light on their abilities. Be sure to contact each reference that is supplied to you and ask them pertinent questions about professionalism, attitude, punctuality or anything else that is important to you. Asking these questions can help you to determine whether or not your expectations can be met.

Another important issue that needs to be addressed is if the wedding planner works full-time or part-time for you. This also depends on the type of wedding you have planned. If you're planning a small wedding you probably could hire a part-time consultant. On the other hand if you are planning a big one a full-time consultant will be capable of dealing with all issues. If you're thinking of hiring a part-time consultant for an elaborate wedding you can be a lot of trouble. The part-time consultant is likely to have another job that would come first before your wedding. Make also sure that you give all time needed to plan your wedding and make this day one to remember the rest of lives.

When interviewing a potential consultant you need to ask if he or she has a contingency plan in case they are unable to assist you. This becomes important when the consultant becomes ill just prior to your wedding. When you hire some one who works alone then you will be likely to be out of luck if that person becomes ill. However, choosing a planner who belongs to a reputable company often affords you the luxury of having a full staff at your disposal in case there are any emergencies that arise.

Planning this event often involves making difficult decisions in stressful situations, decisions that can have major effects on the actual day. When hiring one you need to find out how the would handle such specific stressful situations and how resourceful they would be. If he or she is experienced they should have encountered these situations before. For you it is important to know how they handled a specific situation, how well they think they did and what they have learned from this stressful experience. If he or she is not experienced you should picture a stressful situation and ask how they would handle it. The only important thing here is ensure that the consultant is capable to make decisions in stressful situations in your best interest and it will have a positive outcome.

Your wedding day needs to be to most beautiful day of your life and the beginning of a happy marriage. When you put this important day in the hands of a wedding planner make sure that it is a capable person who your can trust, feel comfortable with and can rely on to make decision under stressful condition that are in your best interest. Making this important day into a perfect day is not an easy task but it can be perfect in the hands of the capable wedding planner you have chosen.
