Self Confidence - That is what they don't teach at the school

Jun 26, 2008
So often we see that adults and our peers become nervous and high rung when put into a difficult or an unfamiliar situation. We often comment on them saying that these people lack in confidence to handle a new situation. But did you ever try to delve deeper into this situation to find out why exactly it happens?

The roots this problem can be found deeply and firmly grounded in our childhood. Many of us have had childhood full of problems. A few of us have also seen our family splitting because our parents could no longer bear each other. Single parent had the responsibility of running the house which often resulted in the neglect of the kids at home. This neglect often shows up in the form of lack of self confidence. But is there anything that could have been done? Well the solution was the same twenty years ago and is the same even today. Fill the kids with self confidence.

Hear them out

Kids are so inquisitive about everything that goes on the world around them. They want to everything from how a bird flies to how an airplane flies. Our busy lifestyle has long since killed the inquisitiveness and the patience in us. Most often we just drive them away when they keep pestering us with their questions and often shouting at them without really meaning to hurt them

While it is true that most of us don't have enough time to answer every single question that they have, it would be a good idea to give your child a few hours exclusively on the weekend. This makes the child feel loved, wanted and important. Don't we feel good and confidence when some our bosses tell us that 'the organization (we work for) needs employees like you'?

What if they don't behave?

Why do we forget that they are kids and they will only learn to behave? And that it is our duty to teach them to behave properly and as patiently as our parents taught us. You don't have to hurt their self confidence to teach them good behavior.

Similarly your kid is also just showing bad behavior and is not a bad child. Just keep that in mind and don't hurt his self confidence. Just sit down with them and tell them that you love them but don't approve of certain behavior and that they should avoid it in the future. This way the child feels that he is not being disapproved of, but just a rectifiable character trait of his.

Laud them for their efforts

When your kids do something good or change their ways for the better you must not hold back from praising them. Praise is worth more than a million dollars for your kids. To keep their self respect intact and on the growth path try to forget and help them forget about their misdeeds in the past. Past cannot be changed and bringing it out again and again can lower a child's self confidence considerably. When you praise your child, just praise them, don't even mention a single negative statement.

But don't go overboard in praising your child. Overdoing it may make him or her feel under pressure to perform no matter what. Just tell them straight that you appreciate the good work done and that you would love them as much as you do now even if they don't perform as good in future.

It is very important to inculcate the feeling of self confidence in a child at an early age and to keep it that way to ensure that he or she turns into a confident adult ready to take on the world.
