Don't Make These Affiliate Marketing Mistakes

Jun 27, 2008
Do you make these affiliate marketing mistakes?

Before we dive into the mistakes, here's an interesting story...

Once upon a time, I wanted to become a bodybuilder. Without knowing much, I signed up for a year's membership at Gold's Gym. Located in Washington Township, New Jersey.

Despite having worked out for a year, I did not make much progress. It occurred to me something was wrong. Instead of continuing on my path of ignorance I bought a book on bodybuilding. Reading that book was an eye-opener.

I got to talking with one guy. A Greek kid one year my elder. He could bench press over 300 pounds at a bodyweight of 165 pounds. What he told me was this: Most beginning bodybuilders simply don't know what they are doing. They lift too heavy too soon. Drive their bodies into the ground. Then lose all enthusiasm for working out. Because they quickly over train and stifle muscle growth.

When I got started in Internet marketing I first found out what mistakes to avoid. My reasoning was simple. Steer clear of the pitfalls most people fall into. I just might succeed at making money online as an affiliate.

First, too much emphasis is placed on niching. The problem with that is you can't sustain a profitable marketing effort. The smaller the niche you choose the worse off you are. You need a big niche that is both deep and wide. So you never run out of customers.

Mistake #1: Not choosing a big enough niche. Sure niche marketing is all the rage. But if the market you choose is too small forget about it. The best way to choose a market is to see if commercial lists exist. Go to the library. Page through the Standard Rate And Data Service. If a category exists for a market in that book it's a good bet the market is deep and wide.

Not collecting emails is another dumb mistake. The way to build a profitable business is to have a list. The list becomes your most important asset. Compile both a prospect list and a customer list. Work them both for increased profits.

Being timid about selling is yet another big mistake. I think the sales trainer, Zig Ziggler, said, "Timid salespeople have skinny children." The statement also applies to business owners and affiliate marketers. Anyone who sells needs to keep it in mind. You make your money by sending the list offers. Do it without apology.

Something else: Stop putting all your effort into low priced items. The real money is in the high priced products. Have a mix of both. Put put most of your time and effort into the high ticket stuff. Again, that's where the money is.

Neglecting offline marketing methods is another way to cut your profits. People still respond best to old fashioned direct mail. Combine online and offline marketing to get the biggest profits possible.

By avoiding the mistakes above you'll make more money as an affiliate marketer.
