The Secret To Saving Money on Gas

Jun 28, 2008
Fuel prices are up, up and up. They will come down a bit as summer ends, but the days of cheap gas are over. Sorry, but it is true. To overcome this problem, you need to consider how you and your car can become more efficient. Here are some factors to consider

New vehicles will not obtain their optimal fuel economy until the engine has broken in. Seals, gaskets and such need time and friction to correctly seal. This may take 3-5 thousand miles depending on the car you have. Check your owner's manual.

Vroom, vroom goes a particular car commercial. Well, that's a good way to blow a lot of money. Speeding up and slowing down quickly eat gas by as much as 33 percent compared to consistent speeds. Take it easy lead foot!

Short trips are another area that will kill your gas mileage. Not only are they of the start and stop variety, but they can usually be combined into one trip that would reduce the total mileage you drive.

When it is cold outside, it takes a while to get your body running when you head out, right? Well, the same thing goes for your car. If it is cold outside, you can county on your cars miles per gallon going down.

While we might drink something warm to heat up, the antidote for most of us when it comes to our car is to fire it up until the engine temperature comes up. While this may seem a good idea, it actually wastes more fuel than if you just drive.

Cargo or cargo racks on top of your vehicle (e.g., cargo boxes, canoes, etc.) increase aerodynamic drag and lower fuel economy. When it comes to mileage, a major issue is air flow. The fewer things blocking the air passage, the better.

Here's one way to save gas that you should definitely know already. When it gets hot outside, don't crank on the air conditioner in your car. It will reduce your mileage by up to 25 percent. Open a window and get the air moving.

Then there are the old stand bys that make a big difference. Keep your tires inflated. Make sure the engine is tuned so it runs efficiently. Clean air filters. Also, make sure your brakes are clean so they don't drag on the drums.

The days of driving gas burning beasts are over. The growth of the economies of India, China, Russia and other countries are putting strains on supplies. Yelling at the oil companies isn't going to work, so start watching how you spend your fuel.
