Dealing With Puppy Pee - A Dog Urine Guide
Problem
If you own a pet dog and are enjoying the benefits of daily walking, playing and grooming, you will realise that there are downsides as well. The barking at night, inappropriate sniffing, the smells and, of course the discovery of those unwanted puddles behind the sofa. Dog urine is annoying at best but it can also stain and harm surfaces in the home including carpets wooden flooring and even the lawn in your garden. So how best to clean them?
Causes
The size of a puddle may be an indication of what is wrong with your dog. Large puddles of urine probably means that your dog just needed to go and there wasn't time to make it outside. Smaller amounts of urine might indicate a bladder infection or that the dog is just marking territory. This is usually indicated by spraying on the same spot or object repeatedly. Usually something upright like a door frame. It is important to clean these area's thoroughly.
Cleaning
Cleaning is best done quickly and well to prevent dogs returning and re-marking. A good dabbing with paper towels followed by a tumbler of water on the affected patch and further sponging to dry the area. Some home remedies include cleaning with vinegar mixed with water, Windex spray window cleaner and even toothpaste rubbed around the area. Whatever you use it is important to remove the odour completely and a shop bought anti bacterial cleaner is ideal for this.
Prevention
Prevention is always preferable and saves a lot of 'dirty work'. Assuming that a puppy has been well potty trained, speying or neutering at an early age will usually prevent marking in the house. Even neutering an older dog will have some benefit. Dietary modification can lessen the concentration of nitrates that cause damage and odour. More water, especially with dry food, will help. Tomato juice, also a popular home remedy can be used instead of water. Always consult a vet before taking changing your pet's diet.
Further Help
When cleaning dog urine it is important to remember that it is organic. So when buying cleaners you will see better results from products that have enzymes to break down the urine rather than bleach or mask odours. Even if you can't smell the scent after cleaning your dog still might. Dog urine cleaners come in spray, foam and powder forms so choose the one that is best suited to the area or material to be cleaned. Also, remember plenty of elbow grease!
