The New Hot Thing: Tankless Water Heaters

With energy costs on the rise, tankless water heaters have become a popular choice for homeowners. Tankless water heaters are much more efficient then their traditional tank type water heaters. The conventional tank type water heater stores and heats energy, day in and day out. This means that while you're at work, on vacation, or just sleeping, your tank type traditional water heater is working away, wasting hard to come by energy. It was one thing to have traditional tank type water heaters wasting energy when energy prices were low, but now that we are in a rather large energy crisis, tankless water heaters make more sense than ever.

The beauty of the tankless water heater is that it does not constantly waste energy when it is not needed. Tankless water heaters, or on demand water heaters, on the other hand, only use energy when you need it. So, they are inherently more efficient. Depending on your situation, you can save as much as 50 percent on your utility bills by utilizing this relatively new technology. Now, installing one of these newfangled tankless water heaters is not always going to be cheap. Some tankless water heaters, like gas tankless water heaters require special routing, combustion, and gas line requirements. This can make what seemed like a simple job, not only a complicated, but also an expensive one. So, it is not always an open and shut case. When it comes to new construction, going with a little bit more expensive tankless water heater unit, makes more sense than ever.

There are two typical types of tankless water heaters, gas and electric tankless water heaters. Deciding which tankless water heater is most appropriate for you is dependent on your unique situation. Gas and electric tankless water heaters, both come with their benefits and drawbacks. Gas tankless water heaters are the most powerful available. They are ideal for a whole home set up. They produced the flow rates necessary to supply hot water for an entire help. Electric tankless water heaters, on the other hand, are better suited for single point locations. Examples would include an isolated shower location, a kitchen application, or even a remote hot tub set up. Electric tankless water heaters are also much more economical when it comes to installation; however, electrical panel changes may be required. Because electric tankless water heaters can be installed right at the point of use, they are extremely energy efficient. In a perfect world, installing electric tankless water heaters at every hot water source would provide for a very green home. Do to the costs of these electric tankless water heaters, installing at several locations is just too cost prohibitive. That is why, gas tankless water heaters are the obvious choice for providing hot water for a whole home.

Now, before you rush out and buy one of these hot new tankless water heaters, it is important to do a little homework. You need to decide which tankless water heater is right for your specific household needs. Do you need hot water for your whole house? If so, a gas tankless water heater might be a good choice. Do you have hot water needs that will surpass your tankless water heaters flow rates? If that's the case, you may need to run a series of tankless water heaters. Now, if you just need more hot water at a dishwasher, washing machine, or any other point of use location, and electric tankless water heater would be the obvious choice. It is also important to check with your local utility, as they often offer incentives, through tankless water heater rebates. The federal government previously offered a $300 rebate for qualifying tankless water heaters. Currently, we are patiently awaiting legislation, which would allow for continuation of this attractive offer. These incentives make what seems like an expensive appliance, a very affordable one. Combine this with the substantial energy savings, and you have a great deal.
