What to See and Do When You Visit Falmouth

Jun 30, 2008
The port and town of Falmouth is found on the River Fal and is located on Cornwall's south coast. The actual harbour in the town is the third deepest natural one in the world and holds the title of being the deepest in Western Europe. Certainly when it comes to Falmouth vacations, there is plenty for one to do and see not just in the town but the surrounding area as well.

Certainly when it comes to finding accommodation in this town, you are not limited. A number of the beautiful Georgian town houses located in it have been converted either into hotels or into guesthouses. Many of these have the most amazing views of one of the five beaches that it boasts. The first of these being next to the Pendennis Castle, then you have Castle Tunnel, Gyllyngvase, Swanpool and finally Maenporth.

As well as the beaches on which you can spend summer days soaking up the sun as this part of the UK gets more sunshine than many other parts. You can if you want learn more about this part of England's maritime history through a visit to the National Maritime Museum. The building that the museum is housed in was designed by M J Long and has only been open since February 2003.

Along with the port still fully functioning as a cargo one where the transfer of goods takes place. The port is also a popular stopping point with many cruise ship operators as well. In 2007, the port was expecting 64 cruise ships to actually stop in at Falmouth port before continuing on their journeys. The port is still a vital part of the town as it is still a major contributor towards the town's economy.

However, over the years because of its location and the surrounding area this town has been popular with film and television crews. During 1935, the actor Will Hay was to be found staying in the town whilst the comedy film "Windbag the Sailor" was being produced. Then in 1948, it was used as a backdrop for some of the scenes featuring Sir John Mills when Scott of the Antarctic was being filmed. In addition, the town has been used as a backdrop for the Disney film Treasure Island that was made in 1950.

Certainly, if you are old enough or if you have seen these films you will soon be able to recognise some of the places in the town as you wander around that featured in it. Although this is a very popular place with tourists from around the world, the town has tried to retain as much of its original character as it possibly can.
