Have Krell Distributing design a radiant heating system for you

Jul 2, 2008
Warming your home using radiant heating is not a new concept. Hypocausts were invented by chilly Romans to keep their public baths and villas of the privileged warm and comfortable.

The method of heating a home with radiant heat has changed with the times as new materials become available, and although this makes it far easier to install than the hypocaust systems all those years ago, the principle remains the same.

Tubing is laid in a grid pattern on the floor, and heated water is pumped through the tubing allowing radiant heat to rise. This means that no matter what floor covering you choose to have, tiles, wood, carpet or even concrete, when you kick those shoes off your floor will feel warm and toasty on your feet and the air around you comfortably warm.

The necessary hot water can be supplied by an existing boiler connected to the in-floor heating system, or if preferred, a separate boiler can be installed dedicated solely to the task.

Solar panels are an increasingly popular method of providing hot water for radiant heating. Although the outlay for this method of radiant heat can be higher initially, once purchased the panel will heat your water for nothing for as long as the sun shines.

The beauty of these radiant heat in-floor heating systems is that they can be retro-fitted. If you already have a tile floor for example, it can be laid on top and a new surface fitted as it only adds about 20 cm depth.

The way it usually works is the tubing is laid in its grid pattern and embedded within a thin layer of concrete. Aluminum heat diffusing material is then laid and finally your flooring of choice.

The most effective floor covering for radiant heating is ceramic tile as it has good thermal heat storage abilities and conducts heat well. Radiant heat will also work well with wood, vinyl, linoleum or carpet, although in the case of the latter be sure to choose the thinnest carpet you can.

In-floor heating is not the only method of warming your home using radiant heat. Panels mounted on the walls or ceiling are another radiant heating method which work using the same principles.

In order to gain maximum benefit from panels you need to be within line-of-sight or at least reasonably close proximity to them. Some people also find that whilst the ceiling panels obviously don't take up valuable wall space, the radiant heat will be felt most directly on top of their heads which can prove uncomfortable.

Wall space can be of a premium, so ridding the home of unsightly radiators and panels is another plus point for in-floor heating, along with its efficient and economical running costs.

Being able to generate and store heat when power companies offer their off-peak low rates, and then release it via thermostatic control for anything up to 12 hours afterwards would perhaps make our ancient Roman friends a little envious of this wonderful modern form of radiant heating.
