Is There A Need To Learn German?

Jul 2, 2008
Many English-speaking people that visit Germany and surrounding countries for holidays will prefer go to English speaking hotels. So is there a need to learn to speak German.

When I visit Germany for a holiday, I like to stay at a resort in an English-speaking tourist area. I think most people feel more comfortable in this kind of environment, especially if you're going for the first time. Therefore, the need to speak German is not essential because a big percentage of holidaymakers in that area will also speak English. Obviously, the staff in hotels, shops and bars will also speak English. So you don't really need to learn to speak German, do you?

Well, I also like to explore the countries that I visit and if you move away from the German tourist areas, you begin to discover that you are actually in Germany where people speak German and not necessarily English. So if you like to explore and travel outside you safe English speaking area, learn to speak German.

How to learn to speak German

Going to Germany to learn to speak the language is going to be an expensive option. German classes in your area are another option but many people go for a few lessons then drop out. Probably the easiest and most convenient way is to download a German course from the internet, get started right away, and learn in your own time.

The convenience of the internet

It's so convenient to download a language course to you desktop. You make a decision to buy a language course and within seconds, it's all there on your computer. It still amazes me that if I decide I want to learn to speak a language like German at say ten o'clock at night, I can be speaking some simple German phrases by half past ten.

Get the whole family involved

It's always going to be easier to learn in a group, but as mentioned earlier it's not always convenient and the tendency is to drop out, especially if you have a busy life. So gather the family round and learn together. All families do lots of things together so you should be able to work some kind of schedule that's suits you all.

Avoid the dreaded drop out

Okay, I have mentioned earlier that after a few lessons in a group learning situation many people will simply drop out and give up. I think in your family group you can prepare yourself for this. It's going to happen, those negative thoughts telling you there's no point. It might be a strange thing to do, but I would talk about this right at the beginning when everybody's is enthusiastic about learning. This will avoid arguments and fall outs later.

Speak to each other in German

Once a month you can have a family discussion in German. Try to talk about your current family issues. If you don't know all the words you need then make a note to include these words in your next lesson.

So if you ever thought about learning to speak German, it's never been a better time. It's easy and convenient to download a course. It's always on your computer and if you only learn 5 words per day, that's over 1800 words for the year, probably more words than you need.
