Quit Dragging Your Feet! Auto Repair Tips For Better Car Care

Jul 3, 2008
Give this a try: Twist one of your feet slightly sideways and drag it along the ground when you walk... That's what your car tires feel like when the wheel alignment is out of adjustment!

A wheel alignment adjusts all the angles necessary to keep all 4 of your car's tires pointing in the right direction. Over time, these very small adjustments need to be corrected. Things as simple as hitting a pothole (we have plenty of those this time of year) or bumping into a curb, as well as normal wear and tear, can change your alignment. It is recommended that your alignment be inspected and measured at least once a year

Why Align?

Increased Tire life - your car is designed to roll on the tires. Just like dragging your foot will wear out your shoe, dragging your wheel will wear out your tire.

Improved Fuel Mileage - Remember how dragging your foot created resistance and took more energy? The same goes for your car, dragging your tires will cause your car to use more gas.

Better Handling - Just like it is hard to be nimble when you are dragging your foot, your car's handling, cornering, and braking will be compromised by mis-alignment.

People say that if your tires show abnormal wear you should have your alignment checked. That is good advice, but why would you wait for your tires to wear? Once the abnormal wear pattern has started, your tires will continue to wear that way until they are worn out, and tires cost a lot of money! Having your alignment inspected before your tires wear will save you money and the cost of new tires.

Because of lighter weight parts as well as fewer parts in the suspension, even the smallest of bumps and thumps can affect your alignment. Studies have shown that as many as eight out of ten cars on the road need some type of wheel alignment adjustment. Don't rely on your eyes to tell you how your alignment is doing, cars of today require sophisticated machines to accurately measure your vehicles alignment.

Look for a qualified repair center with up to date equipment to perform this task for you. They will be able to provide you with a computerized print out showing you both before and after settings on your car. Don't take your car's alignment for granted, have it measured and inspected by a pro.
