Start A Home Based Business Or Rot

Jul 4, 2008
Twenty years ago, going to work meant travelling, possibly many miles, from home to a factory or office. Thanks to the Internet, you can start a business almost instantly, easily and affordably without leaving your own house. It is irrelevant what your skill level is or area of knowledge and you can start a home based business at any age.

Before you can start you'll need to come up with a sound commercial idea. If you are planning to quit your job in order to start, it is important that you patiently take the time to put plans in place before you do.

While most people who start a home based business work alone to start with, they need to grapple with manpower issues as the business grows, you must be prepared for that but such problems are all positive. If you are determined to take this turning in your life there are many things you need to know in order to make it a success.

The procedure I'm outlining here will work for starting any kind of business, but as we're focusing on home based businesses, we must work through the entire business selection process. Ask yourself, what talents and skills have I and how can I use them to best advantage in order to get my new business of to a flying start?

Another question is, can you overcome the obstacles that may prevent you from starting a home based business in the first place? Improve your odds of success by moving slowly and carefully while starting your business and you may join the 35 percent of those who succeeded in their first year and the 85 percent of those who are still in business and doing very well after three years.

Never start a business just because it is a subject that you're passionate about, a suggestion usually advised by people who haven't the faintest idea what they're talking or writing about. Beware! Always investigate a market first and make absolutely sure that there is a demand for your product or service, that is what counts and if you're passionate about it, all the better.

Remember, marketing is the core of your business. A brilliantly designed web site and a first class product that everybody needs and wants, is of no use whatsoever if the site is not marketed properly.

As many as 17 million people squeeze extra hours into their work day by taking work home from their full-time jobs, and another 12 million people are independent home workers who work exclusively at home, the reason being that the Internet and computer technologies now offer home based entrepreneurs the same tools for communications, accounting and marketing as are employed by multi-national organisations.

With the web bringing the world's market to the average household living room, consider marketing your product online. There are many different types of home based businesses, people from all walks of life, from marketing professionals to stay at home mothers, who are seeking out work at home business opportunities.

Network marketing came into its own with the advent of the Internet. Many of these made some of their members a fortune, others have sunk as quickly as they surfaced but that doesn't mean that they don't work because they do. Our attention was initially caught by the following program because both Rachel Long and Mike Glaspie, the two most successful Network Marketers of all time, head the Top Sponsors List. Seeing one of those names is very significant, both in the same place, is even more so.

Constantly fine-tune your marketing strategy and always test new ad copies to see what brings you the most sales. But whether you are setting up as a home based business marketing company or in separate premises, there will be some challenging times ahead. Do any of the products you currently use and really like have a direct sales marketing channel?

A successful business needs five major ingredients: money, time, knowledge, hard work, and marketing, marketing, marketing. Find a team where you can learn form each other on strategies, advertisements, marketing campaigns and team building:

If you asked for advice on what to sell on a street market, I would tell you to visit several, spend time there watching the trader's activities. Don't even bother to take a note of the traders who are standing around doing no trade, it doesn't matter how beautifully displayed their goods are or how much you like them or how polite the traders may be. If they're not taking any money their trading idea is worthless and in a few weeks time, if not before, they will not be there.

You would see a few traders serving customers every few minutes, occasionally a little queue forms then a little lull then there he goes again. Take a note of what he's selling because that information is very important, Move on through the market. Who else is taking money? What is she selling? How manageable are those items? Who is trading week after week? Who is always there taking money?

That research has told you everything you need to know and you can not fail as a street trader can you? Research the Internet because the same applies. Whatever you do, do not wrack your brains for an original idea. Find out who's making the money and do the same.

You have more than one or two skills, so you'll find that your list of possible home business ideas gets longer. Don't censor yourself as you list home business ideas. List all your ideas at this stage; crossing off choices comes later.

If you're not getting the results you want, let whatever ideas you have go and be willing to try something that someone who is getting the results suggests. Get involved with an online community of entrepreneurs. Nothing is a better motivator than involvement with others who are succeeding and sharing the ideas and information they've learned.
