The Lowdown On Pod Chairs

Jul 8, 2008
The infamous Pod Chair (aka Ball Chair, Globe Chair) was initially designed by Eero Aarnio in 1966. Over 40 years later it is still cool as ever to own one of these chairs, as they just look and feel absolutely fantastic in any modern day living space. Described as a "room within a room" the pod chair provides a relaxing atmosphere by reducing the noise from surrounding areas. It's perfect for a quick read, phone call or general chill out and the chair often comes with a rotational base allowing the user flexibility and choice of which way they'd like to face. In 1966 for the first time the chair was presented at the International Furniture Fair in Cologne. Celebrities bought copies of the original for their homes and it found itself in a variety of Design Museums throughout the world.

One of the more memorable uses of this chair was in the film Men in Black. When the candidates are sitting taking the written exam, they are seated in cocoon style chairs. This is a very similar design to the pod chair, but slightly smaller and less luxurious. The bigger more popular pod chairs allow people to sit inside them with their feet up, allowing maximum chill factor. The chairs in MIB are a lot smaller than the most popular model, but it's still not recommended to use them for written exams without a table. The chair has also been featured in films such as 'Tommy', 'Dazed and Confused' and 'Moon Zero Two'. It also featured in such classic television Programmes as 'The Prisoner' and has even been used by Vivienne Westwood in one of her shows.

The television show Big Brother also uses large volumes of novelty contemporary furniture, which really gives the impression of a funky, designer young look to the show with everything looking stunning and also keeps the viewers intrigued by the new and way-out designs. Big Brother is great for seeing some of the funkiest furniture available, and has increased popularity in bean bags, bar stools and occasional chairs.

Most popular reproduction models have a white gel-coated fibreglass shell and matching fibreglass base. Manufactured by skilled fibreglass moulders and expert fabric upholsterers, they are handcrafted using durable and authentic quality materials designed to last for years and years. They come in a variety of colours, but are usually white on the outside. The inside usually comes in red, black, blue, purple and white.

Standard ball/pod chairs are usually around 115 - 130cm high and around the same width. The depth is usually around 1 metre. Cushions matching the colour of the chair are a good addition and are available at most soft furnishing shops.

Hanging pod chairs are now becoming widespread both indoors and outdoors and offer a unique and interesting addition to the garden (preferably sheltered) and are extremely popular with kids. These chairs need to be secured to a solid beam or structure and should ideally be installed by a professional. They are usually slightly more expensive than the reproduction pod chairs and require technical installation.

As with all larger pieces, expect a delivery charge. Make sure the delivery is scheduled for a suitable time and you have the adequate space to accept a delivery of this size as you may have to pay a redelivery charge should you not be prepared for the item.
