Ergonomic Chairs Prevent Health Risks

Jul 8, 2008
Most people do not know what the word "ergonomic" means, or how it relates to something they do every day, day in and day out. It's not very popular now but ergonomics in the workplace is a growing trend and it will continue to grow as long as people still use computers at their home, job and anywhere else. Office ergonomics is the concept of transforming your normal computer workstation that more likely than not is not the most comfortable place you work, into a safe, healthy and productive work environment. This involves changing all of the things you are used to when you think about using a computer to things that are designed specifically with ergonomics in mind.

The chair you sit in when using a computer is considered by some as the most important device in a workstation when it comes to user comfort and healthy posture. Think about how long you spend in that computer chair every day and then think about the position or posture your body is in while you're seated. Most people do not sit correctly because poorly designed chairs do not offer back support or adjustability so that they can fit each user differently. You end up hunched over, a common sight in an office setting, which is very bad posture and if done for many years can result in back injuries or discomfort.

Ergonomic chairs are those that are designed with the user's posture in mind and feature adjustable settings for height, tilt and lumbar support to keep your body in a safe and healthy position while computing. Ergonomic chairs are available in a variety of materials because the material of the chair is not very important when considering ergonomics, so you have many options when it comes to the look of your chair.

Top-of-the-line ergonomic computer chairs allow for full adjustability of every moving part. Adjustable arms are another highly regarded feature on ergonomic chairs because they allow you to adjust the height of the arms on your chair so that they are at the proper position for your body type. Everyone is different and manufacturers of ergonomic chairs keep this mind when designing new computer furniture.

Overall ergonomics in the workplace is a fairly new concept but more and more people every day are catching on and realizing that long-term damage from computing is preventable with the proper ergonomic equipment.
