Is Exercise Really A Weight Loss Superstar?

Jul 8, 2008
Open any magazine or newspaper today, and you are sure to find articles about the many advantages that exercise offers to individuals that are in the process of losing weight. Dieting is important as well, however without the addition of exercise your results will simply not be as good. In order to lose weight, and to keep it off for the long term, doctors and other health care workers say that exercise is the magic bullet.

Just how does exercise help us win the battle against fat you ask? For starters, your metabolism gets a kickstart from exercise that can last up to several hours helping you to shed pounds more quickly. By revving up your metabolism, you burn more calories thereby speeding up the entire weight loss process.

* A calorie is a unit of measurement used to show how much heat (energy) is found in any type of food. It is simple to maintain your current weight if you keep your intake of calories equal to the number of calories you need to function. So it stands to reason that if you either burn more calories (exercise more) or eat fewer calories, or do a combination of both, you will lose weight .

When you are losing weight, you will be pleasantly surprised by the overall look of tightening and toning that exercise will give you. Your clothes will start to fit differently (as in looser) and look better on you. The odd thing is that you might even gain some weight as muscle mass (that's what makes you look sleek and sexy) is actually heavier than fat.

Overweight people sometimes have other health challenges that have to be taken into account before they start exercising. Individuals suffering from various joint problems or injuries, may find it necessary to start slowly. Regardless of your state of health, it is still smart to talk to your doctor before you embark on any exercise program.

Aerobic exercises can play an important roll in your weight loss program. What you have to realize is that you shouldn't have unrealistic expectations from whatever exercise you choose to pursue. Different forms of aerobic exercises will affect the body in different ways too.

Walking is perhaps one of the simplest aerobic exercises that can be done by just about anyone regardless of their present physical condition. The best way to pursue a walking program, is to begin slowly and then gradually step up the pace and length of your walk. The body also needs time to cool down, so don't forget to spare a few extra minutes at the end of your workout to walk at a normal pace and allow your heart rate etc to return to normal.

Swimming is another exercise that is easy on the joints. However, when it comes to weight loss, swimming is not very effective.

All types of dance can be good exercises for weight loss. As with any physical activity, the more time and effort you put into it, the better. Dances that really keep you moving around the floor can be a lot of fun as well as great for losing weight - take a look at Dancing With The Stars for proof!

Weight training, or as it is sometimes called resistance training,is another essential element that should be added to any successful weight loss program. Not only will it smooth out all those lumps and bumps and put them in the right places, but you will become stronger. As you gain more muscle, your body automatically starts to burn more calories helping you to lose weight at a greater pace.

Exercise is not a Superstar when it comes to weight loss, however it could at least be considered a runner-up. We have to keep our bodies moving for optimal health, and so by doing some vigorous form of exercise on a regular basis, we ensure our bodies will remain strong and healthy. If we also combine a good healthy diet with sustained exercise, we can win the fat wars and become the Superstar ourselves - at least in our own minds, and that's where it really counts!
