The Mascot Of All Mascots

Jul 10, 2008
One of the most frightening animals on the planet is the tiger. These beasts are massive in size and they are very beautiful also. Many may wonder what the habitat of a tiger is like. Tigers can live in many different climates. However, they usually are hidden deep in the jungles of India. Their world is filled foliage that helps with shelter from oppressive heat. Tigers also have a thirst that is hard to quench, but the lush jungles offer a good supply of water to keep a tiger hydrated. The habitat also offers food and a great area to stalk that prey. The habitat of the tiger is often being taken away by humans who are looking to invade and take the land for themselves. Since India is one of the world's largest populated areas, the tiger's habitat is more and more in danger everyday.

Since the tigers are endangered, conservation of these big cats is essential to keeping them on the planet. One of the main reasons that tigers are hunted by people is for their fur. They are also losing their habitat and this is causing their numbers to decrease rapidly. However, the humans of the world are becoming more and more aware of the tiger and their world. Keeping them safe has become a huge agenda for many people. However, a tiger is associated with strength and intimidation as well as it should be. This is also a very popular animal that is used as a mascot to represent schools and even companies all over the world. Again, it is chosen because of its representation of strength and pride. Understanding why these mascots were chosen can better help with the meaning behind the tiger mascot existence.

One of the most famous tigers in history is the Exxon tiger. He began showing up in the early 1950's. The reason for the tiger mascot was simple. The gas market was very competitive at that time, and the tiger could show that Exxon was a leader in the field of petroleum. He was promoted as being a cartoon character, but he still was made to be powerful in his demeanor and stature. However in the 1970's the Exxon tiger got a facelift and became a real tiger instead of a cartoon character. This happened because the gas problem forced the world to realize that conservation was at a forefront and it deserved to be looked at in a real light instead of a whimsical aspect.

Another famous tiger mascot is the LSU tiger. He has a unique history that is associated with the Civil War. Mike, the actual name of the tiger, began when the troops of Louisiana were fighting for Robert E. Lee. All of the troops were called tigers and this originated from the famous Washington Artillery of New Orleans. Their mascot was the snarling tiger, and the tradition kept on with the Lee ranks in this great state. Today, Mike is known around the world, and he even has his own habitat built for him across from tiger stadium in Baton Rouge. He is widely known around the nation and it is said that he is the greatest of all the collegiate mascots.

Because we love our mascots, we want to own a little piece of them. That is why sports teams, companies, and other industries that use the tiger as their mascot make trinkets for us to keep in our homes. In today's retail market you can find mouse pads, lamps, wallpaper, and even figurines that display the love of the tiger and all that it stands for in the arena of sports and industry. If you want to get close to a tiger, then you may be out of luck.
