Retractable Awnings Are One Of The Best Things You Can Do To Improve Your Home

Jul 12, 2008
One of the best investments you can make for your home is a retractable awning. A good awning over the right windows and doors adds value and functionality to your home unlike most other home additions you can make for around the same price.

And if you're looking for great awnings for your home a retractable awning is the way to go. Initially more expensive, but well worth the extra price if you're over the long run.

It is getting more and more important to provide good shade and protection for the glass areas of your house. Energy intensive forms of heating and cooling, like electric heating or air conditioning, are becoming more and more expensive. It costs and arm and a leg to sir condition a house now, and it is fast becoming important to find options for heating and cooling houses.

There are a range of options when it comes to choosing an awning for your home to protect your house from the effects of the sun. A good fixed awning will certainly do the job, however it has it's disadvantages. A fixed awning is just that, fixed in place, and although cheap, has a downside.

It is out in the weather 24/7. This results in fading of the awning covers, and these covers need to be replaced reasonably regularly, or they rot and tear in the wind. They also look faded, not a good look for a nice house.

And a fixed awning will usually be supported by some form of fixed rigid arms or poles to hold it up. Usually these are made of steel and will rust, and are often a hazard to those moving around them if they are fixed to the ground, like upright poles.

You cannot remoce a fixed awning easily, so they are normally left in place during weather events like storms and this often results in damage to both the awning and the house, and sometimes other properties in extreme weather if the awning becomes detached from the house.

A retractable awning, on the other hand, is a better option. Sure it is more expensive than their fixed cousins, but they offer a wider range of options.

A retractable awning is one which can be taken back in to roll up or retract at the top of the window. This is usually motorized, and can be automatic, being triggered by such things as strong wind or by a motion or rain sensor.

Once the awning is retracted it is out of the weather and so will not be affected nearly as much by degradation from the elements. It is also not susceptible to extreme weather events, and should not be damaged in this way. The awning cover should last much longer, and it is not held up with fixed arms and poles, so these offer no hazard to people passing the windows, and will not rust.

And it is much more user friendly. If it's a dim dark day retract your awning and let the sun, and warmth into the house.

It's well worth considering a retractable awning if your're buying awnings or covers for your home. It may seem more expensive at first, but it's worth it in the long run.
