What to Bring When Vacationing With Your Pet

Jul 12, 2008
Going on a vacation with your pet is an exciting experience. At the same time, it takes a great deal of preparation in order to make certain your pet stays safe and healthy while on the trip. In addition to making certain your pet's shots are current and purchasing a roomy cage that will allow your pet to stay comfortable while traveling, there are many things you should take with you while you travel.

Packing Hygiene Products

Just as you have to pack a brush, a toothbrush, deodorant, and other hygiene products for yourself, you also need to bring hygiene products for your pet. These include:

* Brush or comb
* Tweezers for removing items that may get embedded in the paws or fur
* Baby wipes to wipe off your pet's paws
* Lint and hair remover

While these items are needed to keep your pet looking nice, they are also necessary to keep your accommodations clean. Many hotels do not allow pets. But, for those that do, you will be expected to keep your room clean and dirt free. By bringing wipes to keep your pet's paws clean, you won't have to worry about accidentally getting paw prints all over the room. Similarly, the hair and lint remover is more for removing hair and lint from your clothing or from the furniture in the hotel room. You might also want to consider brining old sheets to cover the furniture so you don't have to worry about removing fur later.

Making Your Pet Comfortable

Some of the items you need to bring with you are necessary to help your pet stay comfortable while away from home. Some of these items include:

* An old blanket or sheet - preferably your pet's favorite blanket if it has one
* Some of the bedding used by your pet
* Food for your pet, particularly if you are uncertain if your brand will be available where you are going
* Two gallons of water from home, then start mixing with the water where you are at when you get down to the last half gallon
* Your pet's food and water dishes
* Treats
* Toys and other chew items

If your pet adjusts to different situations rather easily, some of these items may not be necessary. To test your pet's level of anxiety, you might want to take it to visit a friend or family member in your town and see how it reacts to the change. If your pet's anxiety level is high, you will want to bring as many things from home as possible in order to reduce the anxiety.

Going for Walks

If you are bringing a dog on your trip, you will need to bring a few other items. These include:

* An extra collar
* A sturdy leach
* A flashlight for nighttime walks

Remember, even if you are able to just let your pet go loose in your backyard for potty breaks, this won't necessarily be the case while on vacation. If your pet is not used to being walked on a leash, you will need to start taking leashed walks before your vacation so your pet will be cooperative while you are away.

Of course, if you are taking your cat on vacation, you will need to bring a litter pan as well as extra litter and liners. You should also bring along carpet cleaner, old towels, and disinfectant spray in order to clean up any messes your pet may make.

While it may seem like a hassle to bring all of these items with you, it will be worth it when your best pal is with you while on an unforgettable vacation getaway.
