Ways on Preventing Vision Problems

Jul 15, 2008
Many parents concentrate on preventing vision problems with each of the children at home by requiring all to wear protective eye gear while participating in school sports programs. Those requirements will help prevent injuries to the eye that might cause vision problems later on in life. Wearing helmets for all contact sports is usually required by schools for all players on the playing field and parents institute rules about contact sports at home in a widespread effort of preventing vision problems.

Parents will also be conscious of indoor activities that might cause vision problems to form. Parents will always encourage children not to sit so close to the television at night, but not think for a moment that the child is showing signs that they already have a vision problem. Efforts for preventing vision problems might be wasted efforts because people are usually born with deformities inside the eye that cause vision to be distorted or out of alignment without any physical activity at all.

Preventing vision problems experienced by far-sighted people might only be limited to buying vision enhancers such as eyeglasses and contact lenses. Sunglasses can be fitted with prescription lenses to ensure good vision while outdoors. Hyperopia is a vision abnormality that millions of people are born with, and prescription lenses will need to be worn while performing everyday tasks. Lasik surgery will correct this far-sightedness, or the person could choose to wear eyeglasses to return vision acuity to normal.

Parents have minimal control over preventing vision problems due to farsightedness factors. The effects of myopia can be corrected using the same treatment plan as hyperopia, but the vision degeneration problems can be hindered early on with regular eye examinations. The blurred vision problems can be corrected through surgical procedures, but nearsighted children can benefit more if the vision problem is corrected with eyeglasses early in life. This vision abnormality will progress throughout grade school, but will not continue when a child becomes an adult.

Some vision problems can be corrected over time if the treatment methods are monitored. Many children are born with varying degrees of an affliction called esotropia, which causes the eyes to be misaligned. There are many types of esotropia and parents can discover this condition early through early eye exams and viewing the child during everyday activities. Eyes have a tendency to cross with this condition but with the use of eye drops, optometrists can help train the eyes to remain focused and centered. Vision shortfalls from this malady are correctable with eyeglasses or through laser surgery techniques, but eye drops should be tried first.

Parents are often faced with preventing vision problems early in life due to the amount of time that they are with the child each day. Disorders such as amblyopia can be rectified with a little hands-on exercise by a parent or a physician to strength the muscles in the weaker eye. Amblyopia is a more treatable version of the crossed eye syndrome. Vision is impaired in one eye more than the other is, and physicians will focus treatment on the lazy eye. Without treatments, blindness will occur in the affected eye because vision will be blocked by the growth of cataracts or tumors.
