Cranberry Supplements - Good for Everyone

Jul 15, 2008
One of the first things that a person will reach for when they have a urinary tract infection is some good old fashioned cranberry juice. So it only stands to reason that cranberry supplements would work well too. Cranberry goes by these other names as well: American Cranberry, Arandano, Mossberry, and Vaccinium species.

Cranberry prevents bacteria from adhering to the cells within the lining of the bladder. North American herbalists believe that cranberry will prevent kidney stones while also removing toxins from the blood. There is no specified amount of cranberry that should be administered and since cranberry is all natural, you can not take too much but you should try to get at least 800 mg of concentrated cranberry juice extract daily.

Assuming that we are familiar with the most basic functions of the kidneys and how they go about producing and excreting urine we can then further understand how cranberry supplements can be so useful. At the cranberry plants earliest stage it will naturally produce molecules that are called flavonoids. Several studies have indeed indicated that the flavonoids that produced by the cranberry have a good amount of antibacterial properties. The cranberry produces a sugar molecule that is very essential as a nutrient in the urinary tract. The flavonoids that cranberries are capable of producing will kill off the bacteria that causes urinary tract infections.

Cranberries may also protect against heart disease and certain types of cancer, probably through the antioxidant and anti-tumor effects of flavonoids found in cranberry.

Cranberry is also available in capsules that many find very convenient as well as beneficial. The capsules are made from dried and ground berries but it is lacking fiber which allows your body to absorb the valuable nutrients much better. Another thing to consider is that cranberry juice contains a lot of processed sugar but the capsules have no sugar so you can take them without worrying about any calories.

Now keep in mind that there is a huge difference between cranberry juice that you buy in the juice aisle at the local grocery store and real genuine cranberry concentrate. The difference is about two gallons, in other words one shot glass of cranberry concentrate would equal about two gallons of cranberry juice.

It is also fine for children to take because it is all natural. It is a good idea to keep cranberry around the house and use it regularly to ensure the best urinary health possible.
