A carpenter uses a set of house plans to build a house. If he didn't the bathroom might get overlooked altogether.

I am a real estate developer, and I would never think of building a house without a plan. A plan is so crucial, townships will not allow a builder to build without one. Why should our financial lives be any different? With a budget and proper budgeting we should be able to realize most, if not all of our financial goals.

Many people in the west are over their heads in debt, facing foreclosure or other financial maladies. Could some of this possibly have been avoided with proper budgeting of our finances?

A money plan called a budget is crucial to getting us to our desired financial goals. Without a plan we usually drift without direction and end up marooned on a distant financial reef. If you have a spouse or a significant other, you should make this budget together. Sit down and figure out what your joint financial goals are, long term and short term. Then plan your route to get to those goals. Every journey begins with one step and the first step to attaining your goals is to make a realistic budget that both of you can live with.

Many people are in financial ruins because they have no budget and decide to spend money on luxuries before necessities. Some people spend all their money on necessities and luxuries and don't put any aside for savings. A budget includes a savings plan, allocations for necessities and luxury items that are planned for.

Even a small amount saved will help you reach your long and short term financial goals. You can find many budget forms on the internet. Just use any search engine you choose and type in free budget forms.

Budgeting can seem overwhelming, but as you have read above it really doesn't have to be. If you don't have time or the inclination to do it out yourself, hire that financial planner to help you with it. What is important is that you get it done, and stick to it so that you meet both your short and long term goals.
