Is The Low Carb Diet a Fad That is Over?

Jul 16, 2008
Have you been around in the world of dieting any at all? If so, then you have almost certainly heard about the low carb diets. There are some famous ones, that have been heavily advertised, but there are also others not as well know, like Carb Addicts and Sugar Busters.

I've been hearing for some time now, that people believe the whole low carb craze is over - it's simply lost its fame if not died off completely. That could not be further from the truth! The fact is, these low diet plans such as Atkins and South Beath can still be seen in some of the top magazines, identified as some of the best weight loss plans with lots of proven results. Even doctors have begun to admit that there are benefits for this kind of diet, if it is done correctly.

If you put a limit on how many carbs you eat, then your body will be forced to burn something else for energy - fat. There is a technical word for this that you may have heard, it is "ketosis." If you have managed to convince your body to burn the fat rather than carbohydrates, your body will make a by-product called ketones, that can be easily detected in your urine. A big part of some of the low-carb diets, like Atkins for example, has to do with being very detailed and technical about this. You are supposed to use testing strips such as Ketostix, to be able to tell for sure that you have started burning fat by seeing the level of urinary ketones. By using these test strips you can somewhat scientifically judge if you need go up or down in the amount of carbs you are eating. Perhaps most importantly, you can tell if you have gone too far if the test strips darken towards the darkest purple, which can be dangerous to your health.

When the most famous proponent of the low carb lifestyle, Dr. Atkins, suddenly died lots of people were prompted to stay away from these kinds of diets. It turns out that the news media made it seem that his death was related to his diet, even though there was no evidence that this was true. So yes there was temporarily a bit of a 'bad rap' given to Atkins and, by extension, the other low-carb plans. But now all that is long past and pretty much forgotten. The time tested diet plans have made fantastic results possible for millions of dieters, and there are quite a few success stories to be found easily online and off.

You can drop a significant amount of weight by practicing the low carb life style. There is no need to take away all of the foods you love, you just need to have them in moderation. This diet is great for those who have seemed to fail at other diets. It kills your hunger quickly and you get results fast. Those perks combined can give anyone the motivation to keep at it and get to where they want to be.

A few years ago, my brother gave me one of Atkins books. It sat around unread for quite a while before I picked it up and gave it a serious look. I'll tell you right now my first impression, as a person who had tried and failed to lose weight many times over the years. It seemed to be a good fit for me personally. My family and friends always called me a 'carnivore' and yes I love to eat meat. So it seemed to me that whatever else might be crazy about the low carb diet plan, at the very least I would feel filled up and enjoy things that I already love, and not feel desperate or deprived. And you know what? Forty pounds lost and dropping my waist size from 44 to 36 within about three months showed me that my first impressions were correct.

Be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new diet and be sure to stay clear of the diets that eliminate carbs altogether as this has been proven to be dangerous. There are many different low carb diets out there today so do some research as to which one meets your particular diet needs. You will be more prone to stick with the diet if you feel satisfied in what you are eating and you see proven results. Yes, low carb diets are still alive and kicking so if you need to shed some pounds then look into one of the many low carb diet choices.
