The RISKS Of A Painful Ovarian Cyst

Jul 17, 2008
An ovarian cyst is a small enclosed space within the ovary containing fluids within a thin boundary. A follicle that is over 2cm bigger than the usual size is classified as an ovarian cyst. Most ovarian cysts are benign or simply functional. However, if they are the hemorrhagic type they can become ovarian cysts that are very painful. Other names for a hemorrhagic cyst are blood cyst; haematocyst; and haemotocele. Such a cyst occurs when a blood vessel in the system breaks and blood enters into the system. Experiencing pain to the right of the abdomen is a classic sign of a hemorrhagic cyst. Bleeding can be rapid and extensive and cover the whole ovary in a short time to produce considerable pain. The blood in the ovary can then start to form clots that can be seen typically on a sonogram. Sometimes, a hemorrhagic cyst bursts and releases blood to flood the abdominal cavity.

The pain may become unacceptable when the cyst breaks. Mercifully, these occurrences are auto-regulating and do not typically necessitate surgical intervention. The right level of health can be restored after a cyst ruptures if the patient takes appropriate rest. It is uncommon for blood to leave the body via the vagina. An effective medicament for the treatment of hemorrhagic cysts is considered to be tetracycline although a physician's advice should always be taken. Upon torsion occurring, another type of painful ovarian cysts can come about. Ovarian torsion is also referred to as adnexal torsion, and is a severe and painful condition that must be urgently dealt with.

Endometriosis can bring on endometroid cysts which are created when a small domain of endometrial tissue bleeds and becomes rejected. The tissue becomes transplanted to another location where it grows bigger. Severe and persistent pain is one of the chief symptoms of endometriosis. It is when the cyst ruptures that the pain exceeds all limits of tolerability. As blood collects in the tissue it turns a darker shade of brown, which explains its name of chocolate cyst. Upon ultimate rupture of the cyst, the fluids in the interior can then enter the bowels, uterus, and pelvis.

The same ovarian cells that contribute to the growth of teeth and hair can also form dermoid cysts. This is a rare type of cyst but can grow to a large size and become relatively painful. If multiple follicular cysts are created in the ovaries these are known as polycystic ovaries. This phenomenon also known as polycystic ovarian syndrome interferes with the correct menstruation cycle. PCOS stems the ovulation process causing cysts filled with clear fluid to grow around the ovaries. PCOS is still not fully understood by health care professionals. However, the reasons behind PC OS have been suggested as genetic weaknesses or hormonal insufficiencies. Studies indicate that women with resistance to insulin are more likely to contract PCOS. There is also a tendency for women with ovarian cysts to mix up the symptoms of endometriosis with those of pelvic inflammatory disease.

A number of factors can cause ovarian cyst torsion, and anatomic changes form one of them. Young teenagers with an absence of mesosalpinx or long fallopian tubes are frequently victims of cyst torsion. Infarction or necrosis of the cyst is often the result because identification of torsion of an ovarian cyst often arrives late in the diagnosis. Although no fatalities have been indicated, pain is intense when ovarian torsion occurs. Ovarian torsion is even more likely for a patient when there is the presence of a large corpus luteum during pregnancy.

The risk of torsion exists for ovarian cysts whether they are malignant or benign. Prescription medicines can bring no long-term solution for the pain of ovarian cysts, even if there may be temporary relief. The factors that lead to the presence of painful ovarian cysts are multiple. They may be responsible for causing the cyst or simply worsen the condition of existing cysts. Risks are even greater for women who are receiving infertility treatment via for example induction of ovulation. The theca luteum cysts will tend to increase the volume of the ovaries in this case. A holistic treatment nonetheless will address the fundamental problem to bring a permanent remedy. This is different to classical medicine, which only addresses the symptoms. In this latter case, results can only be temporary and may also have certain side effects. A holistic remedy is on the other hand a multi-dimensional treatment that addresses all underlying reasons behind the development of ovarian cysts.
