Is Low Carb Dieting Still a Valid Option for Losing Weight?

Jul 19, 2008
If you are among the dieting world then you most likely have heard of the low carb diets. Besides the most heavily advertised and famous ones, there are many others you may or may not have heard of, including Sugar Busters, Hamptons, Neanderthin, Carb Addicts, Rosedale... the list goes on and on!

You may have heard, as I have for a while now, that the low carb movement is has completely faded away. Well I will tell you right now it is not the truth - not even close to the truth. You remember the low carb diet plans like Atkins, South Beach and the Sonoma Diet? You can still find them reported in some of the top weight loss magazines, singled out as some of the top plans for losings weight with clear results. And yes, many doctors accept that these kind of diets can be very beneficial when they are done in the way they should be done.

When you limit your intake of carbs your body is then forced to burn fat for energy. This is where you may have heard the term "ketosis". When your body is burning fat for energy it produces ketones that are present in the urine. The Atkins diet uses Ketostix to show the presence of ketones to determine if they are indeed loosing weight or not. You can judge if you need to add carbs or cut back on them by the color that appears on the Ketostix. The darker the purple means that there are more ketones present in the urine. You do not want to go to the darker colors as this can be dangerous.

When the most famous proponent of the low carb lifestyle, Dr. Atkins, suddenly died lots of people were prompted to stay away from these kinds of diets. It turns out that the news media made it seem that his death was related to his diet, even though there was no evidence that this was true. So yes there was temporarily a bit of a 'bad rap' given to Atkins and, by extension, the other low-carb plans. But now all that is long past and pretty much forgotten. The time tested diet plans have made fantastic results possible for millions of dieters, and there are quite a few success stories to be found easily online and off.

Quite a bit of weight can be dropped by putting the low carb approach into practice. And don't think you have to completely give up foods you love, even if they are high in carbohydrates. There is a place for these foods in controlled portions, and many times there are slightly lower-carb versions that you can substitute. Many people who seem to have failed at diet after diet over many years, have had success with a low-carb plan. The fact is that this kind of eating can fill you up fast, so you don't feel deprived and you start to see results quickly. That is kind of a one-two motivational punch that is hard to beat, and can make all the difference between just another failed weight loss attempt, and a real chance to meet your goals.

As one of the many people who had had a lot of rotten luck with losing weight, at first I wasn't sure what to make of the whole low-carb diet idea. But as soon as I dug into the material, what impressed me the most was how well it fit me as an individual. I am a typical American meat-loving male, and just knowing that I could basically eat all the meat and eggs I wanted to gave me hope that I wouldn't fail from feeling deprived and hungry. And that really did help me stay with the plan for enough time that I managed to lose upwards of about 40 pounds, and drop 6 pants sizes in about three months.

Check with your doctor, nutritionist or other health care provider before making any major changes to your diet or exercise routine. That applies to low carb diets as well. One think you should know, is that there are some plans that want you to try to completely eliminate carbohydrates from your diet. Don't even think about it! It would seriously endanger your health to cut out carbs completely. And that leads me to my next point: there are a lot of low-carb diets available, and you should take some time to research and compare the various options. It is very likely you will find one that is a better fit for you and your dietary needs and personal goals. If you feel that you are satisfied and not hungry, following your plan and not needing to 'cheat,' then it is much more likely you will end up sticking with that plan, and seeing results quickly.
